feeling of hatred and anger

1. 1ST COMMANDMENT (I, THE LORD, AM YOUR
GOD, YOU SHALL NOT HAVE OTHER GODS BESIDES
ME)
- YHWH insist to stick, wala talagang ibang God
- Human search for the meaning of life
- Security or stability, harmony, true contentment,
longing for immortality
- “True happiness and our final destiny are
achieved within the framework revealed in God’s
law” – CFC
- True God is liberating, sets people from
restlessness in searching for true contentment and
everlasting happiness
- Prophet Amos proclaimed Yahweh as the God of
all
- The 1st commandment has a follow-up reminder
of not making graven image or statues and
worshipping them as gods
- What the commandment prohibits is the making
of images in order t worship them because this is
already a form of idolatry
- Book of Exodus 25:10-22, images of the Seraphim
and the Cherubim (angels) on top of the Ark of the
covenant. Later on the ark of the covenant was an
image in itself – sign of God’s presence in their
midst
- Dove – baptism of Jesus and Tongues of fire –
Pentecost are examples that clearly tell that images
which remind people of God’s presence is not
prohibited
- These images are reminders of God or His
presence, they are not to be considered as
substitute for Him or totally equated with Him
since this will amount to idolatry
- Venerating sacred images is not a violation of the
1st commandment
- Veneration should not be equated with adoration
or worship. Adoration, praise or worship is only
reserved for God while veneration is for all sacred
images. Veneration is simply giving respect to the
sacred images shown by touching, kissing, and
other ways.
- Images and statues can offer valuable help or
genuine aid for Christian prayer and worship –CFC
- CFC reminds people to be careful not to treat
these as gods or idols
- No image or mental concept can ever “capture”

THE NAME OF THE, LORD YOUR GOD IN VAIN)
a. SANCTITY OF THE NAME
- Name has a high value
- Closely connected with the person id not totally
identified with him/her
- Mission
- Identity, dignity of a person
- Stood for the person
- God is a holy one, His name, intimately linked
with Him
- YHWH – too holy, Adonai (Lord)
- The name of God should be respected or revered
at all times
- Some people resort to using God’s name to lend
credibility or support to their claim (convince
others)
- God Himself stands as His witness
- “In vain” – using lies or fabrications
b. VIOLATIONS AGAINST THE 2ND
COMMANDMENT
- Using the name of God to curse or invoke
punishment
- Casual use of God’s name in interjections and
curse
- Perjury pertains to a willful and voluntary act of
telling something with the intention of not fulfilling
it
The commandment invites Christians to be true to
their words as God is always faithful to His
commandments
3. 3rd COMMANDMENT (KEEP HOLY THE SABBATH
DAY)
- Time for God and respect for human person
- Worshipping God as a community
- Respecting others in providing their physical
bodies a time to rest
- Worshipping God and resting
- Make the day of the Lord holy in their homes, in
their dealings with others, and in the dealings with
nature – all life is worship or the whole of life must
be an act of worship
- Worship should not be separated from the
totality of life
- Israelites – worship on Friday evening
- Sabbath in the bible = Saturday
- One day in the bible = early evening to evening
- Why worship on Sunday? – great events in Jesus’
life happened on the First day of the week

value of the day is like Sunday or day of the Lord)
a. WORSHIP AS THE COE OF THE 3rd
COMMANDMENT
- Calls upon the Christians to perform their Sunday
obligation of attending Church, celebrating unity
with Christ through the Eucharist
b. VIOLATIONS AGAINST THE 3rd COMMANDMENT
- Anything that does not mount to honoring God

D. MORAL RESPONSIBILITY TOWARDS OTHERS IN

1. 4th COMMANDMENT (HONOR YOUR FATHER
AND YOUR MOTHER)
a. FAMILY AS THE MOST FUNDAMENTAL UNIT OF
THE SOCIETY
- Respecting and honoring one’s parents or elders
with a guarantee of individual blessings
b. FROM BIRTH TO PERPETUITY
- The moral duty towards parents extends even up
to their old age, especially in times of illness and
distress
- Parents are innately good and that they are
primarily concerned for the well-being and welfare
of their children
- It is a geared towards active obedience
- Children should listen to the wisdom of parents
- Inform your parents about serious decisions
(paglipat ng religion, joining frats, getting married
or choosing your courses)
2. 5th COMMANDMENT (YOU SHALL NOT KILL)
a. PRIMACY OF LIFE
- Dignity of human life – no one has the innate right
to take this away from his/her own self of from
others
- Primacy of life is anchored on the fact that human
beings are created in the image and likeness of God
- Corpuses of Marriage: Procreation,
Companionship, Education of Children (Caring)
b. VIOLATIONS AGAINST THE 5th COMMANDMENT
- Murder and willful abortion or directly-willed
abortion are the direct violations to this
commandment
- Euthanasia – morally unacceptable
- Atrocities committed against nature
- Any forms of destroying the environment are also
violations on the primacy of life
- People are dependent on their environment
- If these are amassed, abused and depleted, their
chances of survival also decreases
-God is the giver of Life and He alone is entitled to
end the life He has given
-Life is a gift from God, thus sacred, must strictly
adhere to the Natural Law (natural way of dying)
-Though God looks at a person as special, He also
values the bounty of the earth as a manifestation
of His glory and love to His people

3. 6th COMMANDMENT (YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT
ADULTERY)
a. FAMILY AND MARRIAGE
- Promise to stay together “in sickness or in health,
till death do they part.”
- Thus they are no longer two but one flesh.
Therefore, let no man separate what God has
joined. (Mt. 19:4-6)
- Expression of love, sexual intimacy,
companionship, shared vision
- Healthy love is founded on mutual trust and
contentment of partners
b. VIOLATIONS AGAINST 6th COMMANDMENT
- Adultery – sexual relations with other partners,
harms the society especially the family
- Divorce, polygamy, free unions (cohabitation,
concubinage), sexual acts before or outside
marriage
- Adultery = married(male) + single(female)
Pre-marital sex = single + single
Extra-marital sex = married + married
Concubinage = married(female) + single(male)
- Rape, Prostitution, pornography, masturbation,
oral sex, anal sex
4. 7th COMMANDMENT (YOU SHALL NOT STEAL)
a. RESPECTING ONE’S PROPERTY
- Virtues of temperance, justice and solidarity
- Discern excessive attachment to material
possessions = moderation
- Worldly good, though important, must only
remain subordinate to the spiritual
- Justice – respect and dignity to what rightfully
belongs to others
- Solidarity – accord to other what he/she wants
others do to him/her, thus being consistent with
the golden rule
b. VIOLATIONS AGAINST THE 7th COMMANDMENT
- Cheating during exams, tampering documents,
work poorly done, asking additional allowance for a
requirement, kidnapping, exploitation(food and
housing), stealing from public properties and social
structures, unjust wages, forgery of checks, tax
evasion, business fraud, willful damage of
properties, unsury, corruption, private abuse of
common goods
Common good is essential for the survival of all,
CFC further stresses the need for respect of dignity
and integrity of creation or mother earth
5. 8th COMMANDMENT (YOU SHALL NOT BEAR
FALSE WITNESS AGAINST OTHERS)
a. UPHOLDING THE TRUTH
- Respect to others
- Value of Integrity and honesty towards others
- Speaking the truth about others
- Prohibits altering the truth and discrediting the
integrity and honor of other people
- Honor God who is the truth and who wills the
truth
- Truth as “uprightness in human action and
speech”
- Speaking highly of others
- Liberating power of truth
- Know the truth, and truth will set you free (Jn
8:31-32)
- Following and living the truth personified by Jesus
will really set one free and live a life pleasing to
God
b. VIOLATIONS AGAINST THE 8th COMMANDMENT
- Calumny – a misinterpretation intended to harm
others’ reputation
- Gossips – baseless accusations and slander –
within the range of gossip, intention of discrediting

- Lying – presence of deceit
6. 9th COMMANDMENT (YOU SHALL NOT COVET
YOUR NEIGHBOR’S WIFE/HUSBAND)
- Controlling one’s sexual desires
- Anyone who looks lustfully at a woman has
already committed adultery within his/her
thoughts/ heart (Mt. 5:28)
- Fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desires and
that lust – put to death
- Overcome lusty desires through 1. Chastity, 2.
Purity of intention, words and emotions, and 3.
Prayer
a. VIOLATIONS AGAINST THE 9th COMMANDMENT
- Liberality in relation to purity , faithfulness and
modesty
- Promiscuity – liberation in sexual power
7. 10th COMMANDMENT (YOU SHALL NOT COVET
YOUR NEIGHBOR’S GOODS)
- Excessive desire for material possession, desire
for earthly possessions and goods without limit
- Envy – the sadness over others’ success and
possessions
- Modesty and contentment – when they see
others improving, they look at it as inspiration

- St. Gregory of Nyssa – “Beatitude is a possession
of all things held to be good.”
- St. Augustine of Hippo – “Beatitudes as merely
the ideal for every Christian life.”
1. 1st BEATITUDE (BLESSED ARE THE POOR IN
SPIRIT, FOR THEIRS IS THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN)
- Humility and dependence on God
- Recognize their limitedness
- Poor in spirit means being humble
- Calls one to the conversion of Christian faith
- Prides runs contrary to this beatitude
- Always think highly of others
2. 2nd BEATITUDE (BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO
MOURN, FOR THEY WILL BE COMFORTED)
- Mourning refers to a contrite and repentant heart
- Mourning refers to a great deal of regrets over
one’s sins, for these strain his/her relationship with
God – mourn over their sins, desire towards
improvement
- Mourning includes the recognition of sorrow –
death of loved one, sickness and tragedy (certain
things beyond his/her control)
- Mourns because of injustices happening around
- Mourn for those who suffer
3. 3rd BEATITUDE (BLESSED ARE THE MEEK, FOR
THEY WIL INHERIT THE EARTH)
- Humility and gentleness towards others
- Kindness and consideration towards others
- Patience towards others
- Self-control and prudence
- Strength – one’s ability to control his/her
thoughts and emotions
- Controlling one’s emotions in a dignified manner
- Never boast before God
4. 4th BEATITUDE (BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO
HUNGER AND THIRST FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS, FOR
THEY WILL BE SATISFIED)
- Hunger and thirst for righteousness – seeking God
first
- Living morally upright life is a manifestation of
hunger for righteousness
- Mother Theresa of Calcuta – addressed and
alleviated the needs of her people
5. 5th BEATITUDE (BLESSED ARE THE MERCIFUL,
FOR THEY WILL OBTAIN MERCY)
- “Do unto others as you would have them do unto
you.”
- Not easily cast judgment on others
- Patience, perseverance and kindness towards

compassion
- God is the ultimate role model of mercy

6. 6th BEATITUDE (BLESSED ARE THE PURE IN
HEART, FOR THEY WILL SEE GOD)
- To guard their hearts from any sorts of impurities,
grudges, hatred and ungodly matters
- The heart is considered as the innermost part of a
person. It is the seat of one’s thoughts and
emotions
- “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life.” (Proverbs 4:23)
- Heart overflow with love, empathy and
compassion
- Pope John Paul II – life of purity through his
prayerful life, not fear the truth for the truth is the
guarantee for liberty
- Blessed Mother Theresa of Calcuta spent most of
her time with the sick, desolate and dying
7. 7th BEATITUDE (BLESSED ARE THE
PEACEMAKERS, FOR THEY WILL BE CALLED
CHILDREN OF GOD)
- Peacemakers strive to bridge gaps and heal
breaches between conflicting parties
- Seek justice even at the risk of conflict
- Peace comes from the Hebrew word , Shalom –
absence of strife and evil and the presence of all
good things
