THESIS SYNOPSIS

BY SHIVANI R

TOPIC: Illusion In Architecture – Intervention Spaces For Youth

CATEGORY: Architecture and arts – Social architecture
GUIDE: Monica Sharma

AIM:
Study of illusionary methods employed by artists and architects, focusing on the invention
and evolution of the technique of from its birth. My thesis will involve examining known
methods of illusions utilized in architecture, the development of proportion and perspective,
and the link between the practices of those two techniques.

So basically in every suburb zones/metropolitan city of the country is filling up with high-rise
building, institution and mainly 65% of the city is covered with residence. Everyone in the city
is piled-up with work and stress leading from the work especially the youth.
So in India, economy is going well but 50% of the employees are suffering from stress, anxiety
and depression due to the work load and lack of mental care and time.
There is no doubt in stating that youth these days aren’t lacking talent and creativity but that
is camouflaging with work and stress.

Creating an environment where empowering youth with the knowledge that during their
free time they can take positive control of their lives is of critical importance. So my aim is to
build an intervention spaces as a public youth development and architecturally giving
another dimension using ILLUSION as a part of the whole process with dynamic architecture.

OBJECTIVE:
Both globally and nationally, there is a need for action in building ‘healthy communities’.
Historically, urban planning has focused on improving system efficiency or reducing
environmental impacts. However, in more recent years there has been a focus on linking
characteristics of the built environment with health behaviors and outcomes of the
population. There are increasing concerns that current ‘lifestyles’ in high income countries,
particularly deal with poor quality diet and sedentary behavior, lead to chronic illnesses and
health disparities. Youth can be particularly vulnerable as they have few opportunities to
choose or change their environment.

The objective is to create a collective space that acts as a discovery, exploratory and
transitional journey for the youth whose social life is lost between four walls, giving them a
true meaning of intervention using illusion of architecture
METHODOLOGY:
Knowing what youth are lacking in their daily life and how they can use their talents
constructively in a space which unplugs from the busy city life. And empowering them with
the knowledge that during their free time they can take positive control of their lives. Today,
we as a nation are ignoring our youth which is an important character in the development
of one's country. Therefore, spaces for youth are necessary for them to pursue their free time
constructively. This can be enhanced through skills acquisitions along with recreational
activities so as they are not only pressured to acquire skills but can also use their free time
pursuing leisure as well.
Constructing this environment using vast facilities like:
 Co-working space
 Art galleries/ museum,
 Entertainment complex
 Restaurants
 Activity area
 Provide a space to showcase youth’s talents and interest.

My aim is to have a built space which could be used as display zone and as well as learning
zone. This will surely change the dynamic and aesthetic part of the space. Also acts as
surprising elements for the visitors. This would be a space unlike others buildings in the city.
To create a space with no restrictions for the youth also their development will be the main
challenge of the process
