Introduction
Sports play a major role in our lives. Cricket more so in India. Our hopes and passion are carried
by the emotions expressed in the stadium stands. So, it becomes important to plan for the
scheduling of the different matches in different cities such that organizers get the maximum profit
and fans enjoy the fondest memories.

Problem Description
The upcoming champions trophy is going to be hosted by India. Five teams: India, Pakistan, Sri
Lanka, Australia, and England are going to play in it. The tournament follows a round-robin format
and hence 10 matches are going to be played in 3 different cities Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bangalore
in two slots i.e. afternoon and evening.
There are multiple factors that need to be taken into account while allocating the matches
to the different cities and in turn different stadiums. The demand for seats for a particular match is
an important factor. For example, a high voltage match like India vs Pakistan will definitely have
more demand than that between England and Sri Lanka.
The capacity of the stadiums also plays a major role in allocating a venue for a particular match.
Ticket prices are the most important factor for profit generation. Setting the perfect price for each
ticket crucial for business. These are decided based on three broad categories i.e., location, date,
and timing. In this project, we are trying to find the perfect combination of all these factors, so that
the organizers generate maximum profit. A detailed description of the problem under
consideration, modeling approach, analysis, and discussion are included in the following chapters.

Modelling Approach and Analysis

The objective of this project is to assign the matches to the appropriate stadiums to maximize the
profit. There are five teams that are participating in the tournament, Exhibit 1 provides the rating
assigned to each team based on the audience demand that a particular team generates. Each team
plays one match against each of the other five teams. The priority of a particular match is calculated
by multiplying the team ratings. The priorities of 10 combinations of matches are provided in
Exhibit 2.
Four stadiums have been identified to host the matches for the tournament, which are listed
in Exhibit 3 along with stadium rating and capacity details. Rating for each stadium is assigned
based on the premium amount the audience is willing to pay. Exhibit 4 and Exhibit 5 provide the
ratings applied to matches based on the day of week and time of day respectively.
Each stadium incurs operating costs while hosting any match. The operating cost rating is
calculated by multiplying stadium rating and rating for the time of day. Operating cost for each
stadium combination is given by the product of operating cost rating and operating cost factor. The
operating cost factors for each stadium combinations are listed in Exhibit 6.
Demand for a particular match is calculated by multiplying the product of match priorities
given in Exhibit 2 with the demand factor. The demand factor is calculated by dividing the average
capacity of all the stadiums by average match priority. We thus get demand generated per unit
match priority. Demands for all the matches are listed in Exhibit 2.
The minimum base price of each ticket is assumed to be Rs. 750. The price factor is
calculated by multiplying ratings of the stadium, the day of week and time of the day. The product
of the base price and price factors gives us the actual ticket price. Ticket price for each of the
stadium combinations is listed in Exhibit 6.
Revenue is calculated by multiplying a minimum of capacity and demand with the ticket
price. Profit maximization (Exhibit 7, 8 and 9) is carried out by assigning the matches to stadium
combinations using the excel solver.

Discussion & Conclusion

The managerial insights we could find from the above analysis are as follows:
● Our ratings and priority matrix convey that the weekend and evening timing of three
major locations have the highest ticket pricing, thus contributing the maximum to the
profit
● The matches scheduled on the weekends in different locations always have high ticket
pricing because of the dynamic changes in demand and supply of crowd at a location.
● The maximum profit is generated in the Kolkata stadium during the weekend in the
evening timing when the match is being played between India and Pakistan.
● The matches played in the weekdays which have don’t have an India side involved,
irrespective of the location of the stadium have the lowest generation of revenue.
● The Indian side playing in the Kolkata stadium on weekends in the two timings clubbed
with Indian matches in Mumbai stadium in weekends contributes 60 % of the total
revenue generated during the tournament.
