Clay Slab Box

(MAJOr grade)
Slab Building
● Handbuilding technique in which you roll out a flat
pancake of clay with a rolling pin
● Can be used for vessels or sculptural pieces
Step One: Sketch
● Sketch your theme for your slab box
● I would prefer it to be an even cube box, but come see me
for other design inspirations
● Sketch must have 3 thumbnail sketches, at least one needs
to be colored.
Step Two: Begin Building (Box)
1. roll out a large slab, no thinner/thicker than a ¼ inch
2. Cut out 6 pieces that are all the same size
3. Once leatherhard, score and slip pieces together
4. Cut off any extra pieces hanging off with a toothpick
5. Make a thin coil to smooth into the joint sections
Step three: Fitted lid
● Make sure the last slab will fit on top
● With a toothpick sketch out a smaller ¼ inch square to
show placement of the support
● Score and slip support
● Make sure lid fits
● Add decorative element for handle
