Title: Comparison of using eggshells as an

alternative chalk of Stem students in Cainta senior
high school
INTRODUCTION
Benefits of Egg to health
But first we need to talk about the egg. Egg is an oval or round object laid by a female
bird, reptile, fish, or invertebrate, usually containing a developing embryo. The eggs of birds are
enclosed in a chalky shell, while those of reptiles are in a leathery membrane.Benefits of Eggs
are a very good source of inexpensive, high-quality protein. More than half the protein of an
egg is found in the egg white, which also includes vitamin B2 and lower amounts of fat than the
yolk. Eggs are rich sources of selenium, vitamin D, B6, B12 and minerals such as zinc, iron and
copper.

Eggshells Are bumpy and grainy in texture, an eggshell is covered with as many as
17,000 tiny pores. Eggshell is made almost entirely of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) crystals. It is a
semipermeable membrane, which means that air and moisture can pass through its pores. The
shell also has a thin outermost coating called the bloom or cuticle that helps keep out bacteria
and dust.

Chalk is a variety of limestone composed mainly of calcium carbonate derived from the
shells of tiny marine animals known as foraminifera and from the calcareous remains of marine
algae known as coccoliths. Chalk is usually white or light gray in color. It is extremely porous,
permeable, soft and friable. Chalks are very essential especially for teachers because it is that
they use when writing on boards and in teaching.

Introduction and Background

The problem is about the economic crisis where the researcher wants to help the
schools, teacher, and students to save money in buying school supplies and one of it is chalk.
Chalk is usually white or light gray in color and is composed mainly of calcium carbonate. Chalk
is usually use in public schools by teacher when teaching, it is a tool for writing on blackboards.
The researchers think of way to save money, time, energy and to sustain the supply of chalk by
finding an alternative material for it. Then, they found out that eggshells is almost entirely
made out of calcium carbonate (Burley and Vadehra, 1989) and think of a way to use this in
making alternative chalk. The researcher has a desire to have a deeper and clearer
understanding of the situation.

Statement of the Problem

Do you think eggshalk is a better than the commercial chalk? Why or why not?
Would you accept eggshalk as an exchange for the commercial chalk? Why or why not?
