Properties of Quadrilateral
Properties of Quadrilateral
Parallelogram :
6) Kite :
Kite: A quadrilateral in which two disjoint pairs of consecutive sides are congruent
(“disjoint pairs” means that one side can’t be used in both pairs)
Rhombus: A quadrilateral with four congruent sides; a rhombus is both a kite and a
parallelogram
Square: A quadrilateral with four congruent sides and four right angles; a square is
both a rhombus and a rectangle
Trapezoid: A quadrilateral with exactly one pair of parallel sides (the parallel sides
are called bases)
Isosceles trapezoid: A trapezoid in which the nonparallel sides (the legs) are
congruent

Each member of the quadrilateral family will describe its specific properties.
*Trapezoid
A trapezoid has ONLY
ONE set of parallel
I have only one set of parallel sides. When proving a
figure is a trapezoid, it
sides. is necessary to prove
[The median of a trapezoid is that two sides are
parallel to the bases and equal to parallel and two sides
one-half the sum of the bases.] are not parallel.
*Isosceles Trapezoid
Never assume that a
I have: trapezoid is
- only one set of parallel sides isosceles unless you
- base angles congruent are given (or can
- legs congruent prove) that
information.
- diagonals congruent
- opposite angles supplementary
*Parallelogram
Notice how the properties
I have:
of a parallelogram come
- 2 sets of parallel sides in sets of twos: two
- 2 sets of congruent sides properties about the sides;
- opposite angles congruent two properties about the
- consecutive angles angles; two properties
about the diagonals. Use
supplementary
this fact to help you
- diagonals bisect each other remember the properties.
- diagonals form 2 congruent
triangles
