III. QUESTIONS OR PROBLEMS BEING ADDRESSED

1. Did the amount of soil pH changed after applying the shells?

2. Which among the concentrations is the most effective one?

3. Is there a significant difference between the pH level of the concentrated

soils and controlled set-up?

GOALS/EXPECTED OUTCOME/HYPOTHESIS

The goal of this investigatory project is to determine the effectiveness of

golden apple snail shells and seashells as acidity-reducing agent and to

determine the most effective concentration.

RISKS AND SAFETY

RISKS:
 If the golden apple snail shells are exposed to pesticides or other

chemicals before the experiment, it will affect the results of the study.

 There might be a chance that the researchers will get diseases due to the

parasites from the golden apple snails.

SAFETY:

Ensure that the golden apple snails are free from any chemical before

using for the experimentation. Make sure that the researchers execute proper

handling of the shells and uses proper apparatus to avoid diseases.

HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS, ACTIVITIES AND DEVICES

DESCRIBE RISK ASSESMENT PROCESS AND RESULTS:

 The researchers will use various chemicals in determining the pH level of

the soil samplings. Improper use of those chemicals can harm the health

of the researchers.

DESCRIBE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS AND PROCEDURES TO MINIMIZE RISKS:

 Ensure that the step-by-step procedures in using the chemicals are

followed by the researchers to avoid the risk of having health problems.

Narrative of the Procedure

The researchers will gather golden apple snail shell and eggshells. To

make the eggshell powder, the researchers will boil first the eggshells and will let
them dry overnight. Upon letting the eggshells dry overnight, the researchers will

bake them at 1200C for 30 minutes and sundry afterwards. As for the golden

apple snail shells, the researcher will sundry the collected shells for three

consecutive days. Meanwhile, the researchers will prepare the soil samples to

be used in the experiment. The researchers will weigh 100 g of soil each of the 40

polybags (four concentrations and ten polybags each concentration). Next, the

researchers will grind the golden apple snail shells and eggshells using the mortar

and pestle. Then the researchers will weigh and mix the golden apple snail shells

and eggshells. For Concentration A (75% golden apple snail shells and 25%

eggshells), the researchers will mix 15 g of golden apple snail shells with 5 g of

eggshells. Concentration B (50% golden apple snail shells and 50% eggshells) is a

mixture of 10 g of golden apple snail shells and 10 g of eggshells. Concentration

C (25% golden apple snail shells and 75% eggshells) is composed of 5 g of

golden apple snail shells and 15 g of eggshells. Concentration D is the controlled

set-up. The researchers will prepare ten mixtures for each of the first three

concentrations. The researchers will apply each mixture to its designated

polybag. The researchers will gather the data using the soil test kit after a week

that the soil samplings were exposed to the mixture of shells.
