THE PROBLEM

This chapter contains the general problem, Specific problem, Introduction of the

topic, significance of the study, scope and delimitations of the study, and definition of terms.

It aims to demonstrate the significance and basis of this undertaking.

Introduction

Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) is a perennial flowering member of the mint family, which

grows widely in Europe and North America. The medicinal use of peppermint and other mint

plants probably dates back to the herbal pharmacopoeia of ancient Greece, where peppermint leaf

traditionally was used internally as a digestive aid and for management of gallbladder disease; it

also was used in inhaled form for upper respiratory symptoms and cough. Peppermint oil, which

is extracted from the stem, leaves, and flowers of the plant, has become popular as a treatment for

a variety of conditions, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), headache, and non-ulcer

dyspepsia. Extracts of peppermint are widely used as flavoring (rather than for their medicinal

properties) in many products, including toothpaste, mouthwashes, and over-the-counter

gastrointestinal (GI) products. Menthol, which is extracted from peppermint, is a common

ingredient in over-the-counter topical products used for respiratory congestion, headache, and

muscle pain. (Kligler, 2007)

Eucalyptus is a fast-growing evergreen tree native to Australia. As an ingredient in many

products, it is used to reduce symptoms of coughs, colds, and congestion. It also features in creams

and ointments aimed at relieving muscle and joint pain. The oil that comes from the eucalyptus

tree is used as an antiseptic, a perfume, as an ingredient in cosmetics, as a flavoring, in dental

preparations, and in industrial solvents. Chinese, Indian Ayurvedic, Greek, and other European

styles of medicine have incorporated it into the treatment of a range of conditions for thousands of

years. There are over 400 different species of eucalyptus. Eucalyptus globulus, also known as

Blue Gum, is the main source of eucalyptus oil used globally. Leaves are steam distilled to extract

the oil, which is a colorless liquid with a strong, sweet, woody scent. It contains 1,8-cineole, also

known as eucalyptol. The leaves also contain flavonoids and tannins; flavonoids are plant-based

antioxidants, and tannins may help to reduce inflammation. (Nordqvist, 2018)

Essential oils used in aromatherapy are typically extracted from various parts of plants and

then distilled. The highly concentrated oils may be inhaled directly or indirectly or applied to the

skin through massage, lotions or bath salts. Some essential oil manufacturers have oils that can be

taken internally, but research on the safety and efficacy of this method is extremely limited.

Aromatherapy is thought to work by stimulating smell receptors in the nose, which then send

messages through the nervous system to the limbic system — the part of the brain that controls

emotions. Many essential oils have been shown to be safe when used as directed. However,

essential oils used in aromatherapy aren't regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. When

oils are applied to the skin, side effects may include allergic reactions, skin irritation and sun

sensitivity. In addition, further research is needed to determine how essential oils might affect

children and how the oils might affect women who are pregnant or breast-feeding, as well as how

the oils might interact with medications and other treatments. (Bauer, 2017)

Vapor rub is a mentholated topical petrolatum-based gel intended to assist with minor

medical conditions that temporarily impair breathing, including the common cold. It is applied to

the chest, often immediately before sleeping (Wikipedia, 2019). A single study of vapor rub found

that its improved cough and cold symptoms more than a control in children with the common cold.

Side effects included mild irritation of the skin where it was applied. (Procter & Gamble, 2013)

The primary purpose of the study is to elaborate and make a statement about the Peppermint

eucalyptus Vapor rub. Also, to help the individual to relieve the nasal congestion, cough, and other

physical aches and pain. This product is cheap with natural scent and ingredients. It is good for all

types of skin which will give them a good and satisfying result.

Statement of the problem

This study aims to provide a natural, cheap and helpful vapor rub. Also, to recognize the

medicinal capability of peppermint and eucalyptus, it can soothe physical discomforts, inhaler,

nasal congestion, coughs and more. The researchers stated that peppermint and eucalyptus are

good for pain, nausea, skin and can also prevent bacteria. Based on our research, peppermint and

eucalyptus have many constituents that will be benefited.

Significance of the Study

As information in this research paper focuses on the Antibacterial Soap made of Guava

Leaves Extract, it shall be beneficial to the different groups of people as discussed in the

succeeding paragraphs.

This study hopes to know the benefits of the Antibacterial soap made of Guava Leaves

Extract; it shall be beneficial to the different groups of people as discussed in the succeeding

paragraphs.

To the people, this study will help them to have knowledge and to know the

effectiveness of peppermint and eucalyptus for pain, coughs, nasal congestive and

other physical discomforts.

To the environment, this study will benefit the environment it will increase the

possibilities of having a eucalyptus and peppermint.

To the parents, this study will benefit them in the awareness of the uses and effects

of vapor rub

To the Future Researcher, this study will help them to have information relating

to these topics that will assist them to create a research journal with more establish

and concrete objectives.

 This study focused on the Peppermint and Eucalyptus Vapor rub. This study extends up to

trying the product to show its effectiveness and how the respondent user reacts on it. The study

done by survey research. This study of peppermint and eucalyptus essential oil is often useful. It

can treat, cure, prevent bacteria and capable of being an herbal plant for pain, coughs, nasal

congestive and other physical discomfort.

Scope and Delimitation

This study conducted at Batangas Eastern Colleges (BEC). It is a big contribution to the

evaluation of the upcoming learners (Senior High students) as well as how they solved the conflict

through strategies and methods. It is another compilation of information that could help them to

improve education. The researchers have no control over the willingness of the respondents to be

involved in this study. The researchers have 30 respondents from the Grade 11 students and 30

respondents from the Grade 12 students for the survey questionnaires.

Conceptual Framework

The conceptual Framework of the study provides the general summary of what determined

by the researchers. This study was based on the concepts related to the Peppermint and Eucalyptus

Vapor Rub. This study conducted a survey to perceived the results of having a vapor rub. After

gathering the needed information and data, the researchers analyzed and interpreted the data to

come up with findings and conclusions for the study.

purifying, cleansing, clarifying, and immune-boosting oil that is ideal for use on skin, in

aromatherapy, and as a surface cleaning agent and a fabric freshener. it is a popular ingredient in

balms, inhalers, massage blends, and dental hygiene products for its soothing, stimulating, and

anti-bacterial properties. Also, it is believed to freshen air, eliminate airborne bacteria, promote

easier breathing and be antiseptic.

Peppermint essential oil has been found to eliminate harmful bacteria, relieve muscle spasms and

flatulence, disinfect and soothe inflamed skin, and to release muscle tension when used in a

massage.

This study will contain three aspects- the input, process and output.

From the input, to determine the profile of the respondents according to their age and

gender, this study will ought to verify and look information about the respondents.

From the process, the researchers conducted a survey and questionnaires that are answered

by the respondents, the Senior High School of Batangas Eastern College. This is to determine their

opinion and critiques on effectiveness peppermint and Eucalyptus Vapor Rub.

The output shows the result of the whole conceptual framework which are the effects and

benefits of the peppermint and eucalyptus vapor rub in coughs, nasal congestion and other physical

aches and pains that will give a good result using vapor rub with peppermint and eucalyptus

essential oil. Through the process, by having a survey and questionnaire the respondents are free

to give their opinions and critique that result of the product.

Definition of terms

These terms listed below are important to understanding this study. Some words may not

have their original meaning as a locality where the study was conducted used different personal

meanings to some words.

Antibacterial. It means that directed or effective against bacteria (Merriam Webster,

2019). In this study, it refers to one of the benefits of peppermint and eucalyptus essential oil.

Anti-inflammatory. Anti-inflammatory is the property of a substance or treatment that

reduces inflammation or swelling (Wikipedia, 2019). In this study, it refers to one of the benefits

of peppermint and eucalyptus essential oil

Aromatherapy. It entails the use of essential oils and other natural aromatics for physical,

psychological and spiritual well-being (Aroma web, 2019). In this study, it refers to the oils such

as peppermint and eucalyptus that will be used for the product.

Antiseptic. It is a preventing or arresting the growth of microorganisms as on living

tissue (Merriam Webster, 2019). In this study, it refers to one of the benefits of peppermint and

eucalyptus essential oil

Cough. It is a body's way of responding when something irritates your throat or airways

(Mayo Clinic, 2019). In this study, it is one of the problems that will be cure using vapor rub with

peppermint and eucalyptus.

 Essential oil. It is an oil, usually with a strong smell, that is taken from a plant and is used

to make perfume, or for rubbing into a person's body during massage (Cambridge Dictionary,

2019). In this study, it refers to a type of liquid that will be used in this study to produce a product.

Eucalyptus. Any of several types of tree, found especially in Australia,

that produce an oil with a strong smell. Eucalyptus oil is used in medicine and industry (Cambridge

Dictionary, 2019). In this study, it refers to the one of the main ingredients for making vapor rub.

Nasal congestion. Also called a stuffy nose, is often a symptom of another health problem

such as a sinus infection. It may also be caused by the common cold (Moore, 2019). In this study,

it is one of the problems that will be cure using vapor rub with peppermint and eucalyptus.

Pain. A distressing feeling often caused by intense or damaging stimuli (Wikipedia,

2019). In this study, it is one of the problems that will be cure using vapor rub with peppermint

and eucalyptus.

Peppermint. A strong, fresh flavoring from a type of mint plant (Cambridge Dictionary,

2019). In this study, it refers to the one of the main ingredients for making vapor rub.
