ACCELERATION

The motion of an object in

which the velocity changes
in either magnitude (speed)
or direction or both
acceleration = change in velocity (m/s)
elapsed time (s)
Sample Problem
Michael is driving his sports car at
30 m/s when he sees a dog on the
road ahead. He slams on the
brakes and comes to a stop in 3.0
seconds. What was the
acceleration of Michael’s car?
SAMPLE PROBLEM 2

SAMPLE PROBLEM 3
Albert is riding his scooter at a velocity of
22m/s, when he sees an old woman
crossing the road 45m away. He
immediately steps hard on the brakes to
get the maximum deceleration of
2.
7.5m/s How far will he go before
stopping? Will he hit the old woman?
SAMPLE PROBLEM 4
An airplane from rest
accelerates on a runway at
2
5.50m/s for 20.25s until it
finally takes off the ground.
What is the distance covered
before takeoff?
SAMPLE PROBLEM 5
The driver traveling 19.44m/s tries
to stop the car and finds that the
breaks have failed. The emergency
brake is then pulled and the car
comes to a stop in 120 m. Find’s the
car’s deceleration.
QUIZ #1
1. A jeepney from rest
accelerates uniformly over a
time of 3.25 seconds and
covers a distance of 15 m.
Determine the acceleration of
the jeepney.
QUIZ #1
1. A jeepney from rest

Determine the acceleration of
the jeepney.
2. An object with an initial velocity of
4𝑚/𝑠 moves in a straight line under a
constant acceleration. Three seconds
later, its velocity is 14m/𝑠.
(a) How far did the object travel
during this time?
(b) What was the acceleration of the
object?
•A train accelerates to a speed
of 20m/s over a distance of
150 m. Determine the
acceleration (assume
uniform) of the train.
•An object with an initial velocity of 4𝑚/𝑠
moves in a straight line under a constant
acceleration. Three seconds later, its
velocity is 14m/𝑠.
(a) How far did the object travel

(b) What was the acceleration of the
object?

•Given
Vi = 0 m/s
t= 3.25 s

•An object starts from rest and
uniformly accelerates at a rate of
2
2 𝑚/𝑠 for 5.0 seconds.
(a) What is the object’s displacement
during this 5-second time period?
(b) What is the object’s final velocity?
(c) How many seconds does it take the
object to have a displacement of 15
meters?
•A train is traveling down a straight
track at 20 𝑚/𝑠 when the engineer
applies the brakes, resulting in an
2
acceleration of−1.0 𝑚/𝑠 as long as the
train is in motion. How far does the
train move during a 20-s time interval
starting at the instant the brakes are
applied?
•The time a male bungee
jumper is freely falling is 1.5
seconds.
a. What is the velocity of the
jumper at the end of 1.5
seconds?
b. How far does he fall?
A brick falls freely from a high
scaffold and hits the ground
after 3.5 seconds. How high is
the scaffold? What is the
velocity of the brick just
before hitting the ground?

from a bridge 25m above
the water. With what
velocity does it hit the
water?
A juggler tosses three balls
alternately vertically upward.
Each ball has an initial velocity
of 5 m/s. How high does each
ball rise? How long does each
ball remain in the air?
GIVEN:

Vi= 5m/s
Vf= 0m/s
g= - 9.8m/s 2
d=?
t=?
a. d= Vf2 - VI2/ 2g

= (0 m/s ) 2 –(5m/s) 2/ 2 -9.8m/s2

= -25m2/ s2 / - 19.6m/s2

d= 1.28 m
t= 2 (Vf –Vi / g)
= 2 (0m/s – 5m/s / -9.8m/s2)
=2(-5 m/s / -9.8m/s2)
=2(0.51s)
t=1.02s
