Q.1 a) Compare the manufacturing, merchandising, and service sectors. How do they differ
as to the kinds of businesses in each category, the nature of their output, and type of
inventory, if any? (10)
b) How are non-factory costs and costs that benefit both factory and non-factory
operations accounted for? (10)
Q.2 a) Materials often represent a substantial portion of a company’s assets; therefore, they
should be controlled from the time orders are placed to the time finished goods are
shipped to the customer. What are the control procedures used for safeguarding
materials? (10)
b) Marino Company predicts that it will use 25,000 units of material during the
year. The expected daily usage is 200 units, and there is an expected lead
time of five days and a desired safety stock of 500 units. The material is
expected to cost Rs. 5 per unit. Marino anticipates that it will cost Rs. 50 to
place each order. The annual carrying cost is Rs. 0.10 per unit. (10)

How does a standard cost accounting system work, and why is it valuable to

b) Roaming Bicycle Manufacturing Company currently produces the handlebars
used in manufacturing its bicycles, which are high-quality racing bikes with
limited sales. Roaming produces and sells only 6,000 bikes each year. Due to
the low volume of activity, Roaming is unable to obtain the economies of
scale that larger producers achieve. For example, Roaming could buy the

handlebars for Rs. 35 each; they cost Rs. 32 each to make. The following is a
detailed breakdown of current production costs. (10)

Q.5 a) What does the term break-even point mean? What are three alternative approaches to
determine the break-even point? What do the results of these approaches show? (08)

Use the contribution margin ratio approach and consider each requirement
separately.
i. What is the break-even point in dollars? In units?
ii. To obtain a profit of Rs. 36,000, what must the sales be in dollars? In units?
iii. If the sales price increases to Rs. 50 and variable costs do not change, what
is the new breakeven point in dollars? In units?

manufacturing/ non-trading organization of your interest which supports you in preparing
a report of about 1000 words on the topic allotted to you, to be submitted to your teacher
for evaluation.
Select one of the following topics according to the last digit of your roll number. For
