Review of Related Literature and Studies

Self-esteem,

Self-esteem reflects an individual's overall subjective emotional evaluation of their own worth. It
is the decision made by an individual as an attitude towards the self. Self-esteem encompasses
beliefs about oneself, (for example, "I am competent", "I am worthy"), as well as emotional
states, such as triumph, despair, pride, and shame. Smith and Mackie (2007) defined it by saying
JARMMETH COLLEGE, INC.
Blk 39 Lot 12 Ruth St., Francisco Homes III,

Muzon, City of San Jose del Monte. Bulacan

"The self-concept is what we think about the self; self-esteem, is the positive or negative
evaluations of the self, as in how we feel about it.:107

Self-esteem is attractive as a social psychological construct because researchers have

conceptualized it as an influential predictor of certain outcomes, such as academic
achievement,[3][4] happiness,[5] satisfaction in marriage and relationships,[6] and criminal
behavior.[6] Self-esteem can apply specifically to a particular dimension (for example, "I believe
I am a good writer and feel happy about that") or a global extent (for example, "I believe I am a
bad person, and feel bad about myself in general"). Psychologists usually regard self-esteem as
an enduring personality characteristic ("trait" self-esteem), though normal, short-term variations
("state" self-esteem) also exist. Synonyms or near-synonyms of self-esteem include many things:
self-worth,[7] self-regard,[8] self-respect,[9][10] and self-integrity.

Local Study

We all know that self-esteem sometimes referred to as self-worth or self-respect, can be an

important part of success. Too little self-esteem can leave people feeling defeated or depressed. It
can also lead people to make bad choices, fall into destructive relationships, or fail to live up to
their full potential. Too much self-esteem, as exhibited in narcissistic personality disorder, can
certainly be off-putting to others and can even damage personal relationships.
JARMMETH COLLEGE, INC.
Blk 39 Lot 12 Ruth St., Francisco Homes III,

Muzon, City of San Jose del Monte. Bulacan

Self-esteem levels at the extreme high and low ends of the spectrum can be harmful, so ideally,
it's best to strike a balance somewhere in the middle. A realistic yet positive view of yourself is
generally considered the ideal. But what exactly is self-esteem? Where does it come from and
what influence does it really have on our lives?

Foreign Study
JARMMETH COLLEGE, INC.
Blk 39 Lot 12 Ruth St., Francisco Homes III,

Muzon, City of San Jose del Monte. Bulacan

The purpose of self-esteem is to feel and imagine that people nurtured in their mind over time
about their self. In simple words, self-esteem is self-assessment; this perception and evaluation
can be positive or negative and pleasant or unpleasant. Children with high self-esteem, usually
feel good about themselves and better able to resolve their conflicts with other children and are
resistant to deal with problems. One of the most important human traits to achieve objectives is
self-esteem. The term self-esteem means “reverence for self.” The “self” pertains to the values,
beliefs, and attitudes that we hold about ourselves. Having a strong will and self-confidence,
decision-making power and originality, creativity, sanity and mental health is directly related to
self-esteem and sense of self-worth. It also refers to an individual’s sense of his or her value or
worth, or the extent to which a person values, approves of, appreciates, prizes, or likes him or
herself. During childhood, if individual’s feelings are respected, thoughts valued and abilities
recognized then self-esteem strengthens. When feelings are trampled upon, thoughts be littled
and ability criticized then the individual’s self-esteem remains at a low point of development and
is therefore weak. During the course of time, an individual faces many life situations. Depending
upon the success or failure and one's reaction to every significant situation in life, self-esteem
grows stronger or gets considerably weakened Self-esteem is described as the evaluation that one
makes about oneself, based on one's self-worth. Increases and decreases in self-esteem generally
bring strong emotional reactions. Self-esteem and academic performance are interrelated factors.
This study tries to bring the connectivity between academic performance and the self-esteem.
The main aim of the study is to know the level of self-esteem of the students with low academic
performance. The objectives of this study are to investigate the relationship between self-esteem
and academic achievement, to understand the Socio-Economic background, to assess the level of
self-esteem, and to know what could be the reason for low academic performance in spite of
having high self-esteem. The research design used for the study would be descriptive in nature.

Research Methodology

This chapter contains the research design, the design, the sample, the sampling
procedure and data collection. It also deals with research tools, validity and
reliability and it discusses the data analysis techniques.

Research design

This study used the survey research design. The design was ideal because it
because it facilitated collection of data from a large number of respondents through
a self-administered questionnaire. It also allowed statistical analysis of large data
base.

The Population and Sampling Procedure

The sample for this study was selected from Grade 7 student school in Jarmmeth
College Inc. in Bulacan. Jarmmeth College was chosen because it had shown a
below average performance,(8) boys and (12) girls and the total of all is (20)
persons

Blk 39 Lot 12 Ruth St., Francisco Homes III,

Muzon, City of San Jose del Monte. Bulacan

Data collection Instruments

Partially structured and open-ended questionnaire was develop to collect data on

the variables identified for the study. Since low self-esteem concept is abstract,
affective questions were used to bring out an individual self-esteem concept. These
questions aimed at eliciting emotion on how students felt towards the teachers,
follow student parents and the school environment at large.

Statistical treatment

Frequency and percentage distribution. This was used to get a qualitative analysis
of the respondents’ self - esteem levels. It was also used to display data that
specified the percentage of observation that exist for each data point
