NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

Cheat Sheet by

1. NIGHT SKY w/ THE STARS

Start with these settings in your camera:
- Manual mode and manual focus on infinity
- Dial ISO 1600, F/2.8, 15s or ISO 3200, F/4, 15s
- Pro Tip: Take a test shot and adjust the ISO or
Shutter speed depending on the brightness/
darkness on the image. If too dark then
reduce the shutter speed to 20s or 25s. If too
bright then reduce the ISO or increase shutter
speed.

2. CITY SCAPES w/ LIGHTS .

- Manual mode & AF on the bright light source
- ISO 100, F/13, 20s
- Pro Tip: protect your highlights (the brightest
spots on your image), when in doubt take
two shots: one for the brightest part & one for
the darkest.
- Note: this will get you light trails, blurry crowds
and smooth water surface

3. PEOPLE DIMLY LIT

- Manual mode & AF on the person
- ISO 800, F/2.8, 1/50s or ISO 1600, F/4, 1/50s
- Pro Tip: your subject must be lit by the
building/lamp/etc… for this to work. If there is
no light available increase the shutter speed
and ask the person to hold still.

dark otherwise all your shots will be underexposed.
- Experiment and adjust to get the right exposure. Those
settings are starting points.
- For blurs, light trails, smooth water etc… shooting slower
than 0,4s. 1s,4s,6s will give you nice results
- Keep your camera stable with a tripod for example.
- Bring a flash light to see what you do and light paint.
- Use a 2 seconds timer to avoid camera shake.
- Enjoy the process regardless of the results! :-)
