IV. PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing previous lesson or
Activity 2: Perfect Square Trinomial to Square of a Binomial
presenting the new lesson
B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson We can solve any quadratic equation by converting it to an equation with a squared term equal to a constant. Rewriting the equation in this form
allows us to solve it by extracting square roots. We will now examine a procedure for doing this called completing the square. This procedure is
used for an equation such as x 2  6 x  16  0 .
C. Presenting examples/instances of the Here is the procedure for solving a quadratic equation by completing the square, provided the coefficient of the squared term is 1.
new lesson 1. Isolate all variable terms on one side of the equation, with the constant term on the other side of the equation.
2. Identify the coefficient of the first-degree term. Take half of that number, square it, and add that to both sides of the equation.
3. Factor the resulting perfect square trinomial.

4. Take the square root of each side of the equation. Be sure to include on the side where the constant is.
5. Solve the resulting equation.
D. Discuss new concepts and practicing Example 1. Solve x 2  6 x  16  0 by completing the square.
new skills #1
x 2  6 x  16  0
x 2  6 x  16
x 2  6 x  9  16  9
 x  3  25

 x  3   25

x  3  5
x  35
E. Discussing new concepts and Example 2. Solve x 2  5 x  5  0 by completing the square.
practicing new skills #2
 5  3 5 5  3 5 
The solution set is  ,  .
 2 2 
F. Developing mastery Students will solve by pair. (Solve x 2  7 x  18  0 by completing the square)
G. Finding practical applications of In the previous example, half of b was a fraction, causing us to add a fraction to both sides of the equation. In this case, factoring the resulting
concepts 2
b b2
trinomial can be difficult. Keep in mind: when adding   , or , to both sides while completing the square, the trinomial will factor to be of
2 4
2 2
 b  b b2
the form  x   . This fact can be verified by simplifying  x   and seeing that it is equal to x 2
 bx  .
 2  2 4
H. Making generalizations and To solve a quadratic equation by completing the square, we must be sure that the leading coefficient is positive 1. If the leading coefficient is not
abstractions about the lesson equal to 1, we divide both sides of the equation by the leading coefficient.
Example 3. Solve 2 x 2  9 x  5  0 by completing the square.
 9  41 9  41 
The solution set is  , .
