Question:

The following metals are extracted from their ores using pyrometallurgical techniques.
With reference to one of the largest mines in the world, give a detailed description of the
pyrometallurgical extraction process. Your description should include diagrams, reactions, nature
and quality of raw materials, nature and composition of the products and slag, conditions of
operation, construction material for the furnaces e.t.c. The report should include:

(i) Concentrate pre-treatment [15 marks]

(ii) Smelting process [60 marks]
(iii) Refining process [15 marks]
(iv) General report presentation [10 marks]
