It’s with deep disappointment that I write down this letter to you, the ones who entrusted us with the
responsibility to represent your interests as the major shareholders at this great academic institution. The
ministry of Higher and Tertiary education on the 13th of January 2020 approved recommendations by the
institution’s administration to hike tuition fees with over 1000% (see the attached document). The Ministry
of Higher and Tertiary education by giving this approval has in many ways made access to education even
more expensive and beyond the reach of many. As the student representative council leadership, after
consultations with many of you we have seen it fit to register our displeasure to the Ministry of Higher and
Tertiary education officially and exploit every avenue possible including drafting of petitions and
demonstrations to seek a review on the proposed and approved figures. The students at the National
University of Science and Technology unlike our other sister institutions carry the extra burden of negotiating
for accommodation with landlords in the community who insist on rent payment in USD. It is such extra
burdens and costs we bear that have pushed us to seek that Ministry reviews the approved figures downwards.
We have joined hands with our sister institutions who equally have been affected by the decision made by
Ministry to hike fees and we will be acting together in unity with other student leaders.

Our priority is the students, we are forever at your service and should you have any recommendations or
ideas we are open. Remember you are the minds, passion and hearts driving this entire team, we are only as
capable, wise and strong as you are. We derive our strength from the students union, we get our ideas and
direction from this pool of great minds, our voice is nothing but yours. You and me together are stronger,
mountains of adversity are nothing when we stand united.
