(DYNAMICS)
LESSON #1

Introduction to
Dynamics of Rigid
Bodies

Introduction to Dynamics of Rigid Bodies

• To understand the principles of dynamics
• To learn the Kinematics equations of motion
• To understand the Newton’s law of motion

Introduction to Dynamics of Rigid Bodies

Introduction to Dynamics of Rigid Bodies
DYNAMICS is the branch of
mechanics which deals with the
study of bodies in motion.

Introduction to Dynamics of Rigid Bodies

1) Kinematics – is used to define motion
of a particle of body without
consideration of the forces causing the
motion. It essentially deals with relation
between displacement (S), velocity (V)
and acceleration

Introduction to Dynamics of Rigid Bodies

2) Kinetics – is used to relate the force
acting on a body to its mass and
acceleration.

Introduction to Dynamics of Rigid Bodies

S – displacement
V
(velocity = time rate of change of displacement)

a
(acceleration = rate if change of velocity)

VdV = a dS

Introduction to Dynamics of Rigid Bodies

1) A particle acted upon by a balanced
force system has no acceleration

Introduction to Dynamics of Rigid Bodies

2) A particle acted upon by an
unbalanced force system has an
acceleration which is directly
proportional to the resultant of the
force system.
F = ma, F = Wa/g
Introduction to Dynamics of Rigid Bodies
3) Action and reaction forced between
two particles are always equal and
oppositely directed.
