A Proposed Duplex Residence

A. Definition of Terms
Person With Disabilities
It is a person who has limitations to his or her activities or has impairments.
Special design and planning standards are used in order to accommodate these kind
of occupants.
Duplex House
It is a single home that is separated by a firewall and two living spaces.
Thermal Comfort
It can be defined as “the condition of mind which expresses satisfaction with
the environment’”. It is significant in designing since most of the time people spent
their time inside the building. Thus, it highlights the occupants comfort and health
considering both indoor and outdoor climate of the location.
Way Finding
Good architectural wayfinding design is important to universal design
because it facilitates user access, increases satisfaction, and reduces stigma and
isolation of users with disabilities. It reduces the confusion of visitors and mistakes
by employees, saving time and money and preventing accidents. It also reduces stress,
boosting health, and productivity (Evans and McCoy, 1998).
Acoustics
Architectural acoustics is the process of managing how both airborne and
impact sound is transmitted – and controlled – within a building design. While
virtually every material within a room – from furniture to floor coverings to computer
screens – affects sound levels to one degree or another, wall partitions, ceiling
systems and floor/ceiling assemblies are the primary elements that designers use to
control sound.
Orientation
Orientation refers to the way a building is situated on a site and the
positioning of windows, rooflines, and other features. A building oriented for solar
design takes advantage of passive and active solar strategies. Building orientation and
building materials also facilitate temperature moderation and natural daylighting.
Accessibility
Accessibility means creating a universal design that have spaces that meet the
needs of people, young and old, able and disabled. From the arrangement of rooms or
space planning to the choice of interiors and many more. The goal of accessibility is
to usable to the greatest extent possible.
Socio-Cultural
The socio-cultural identity is a basic life requirement for the formation of the
individuality and is based on a solidarity of language, territory, historical memory and
concept of the world, cultural traditions and ways of lif
Safety & Security

1
A Proposed Duplex Residence

Security and safety requires a proactive approach that anticipates—and then

protects—the building occupants, resources, structure, and continuity of operations
from multiple hazards such as human aggressors and also the climate of the location.
Ventilation
Ventilation is necessary in buildings to remove 'stale' air and replace it with
'fresh' air. This helps to moderate internal temperatures, reduce the accumulation
of moisture, odors and other gases that can build up during occupied periods, and
create air movement which improves the comfort of occupants. Ventilation can be in
the form of mechanical and natural.
Lighting
Providing a building with natural light is more than just the solution of a
problem of energy consumption; more, even, than an aesthetic resource easily
incorporated into the architecture. Light in architecture must be part of a more general
philosophy that creates a more respectful, sensitive attitude in human beings towards
the environment in which they live may it be artificial or natural light.
Linkages
Linkages result in a built form with place adaptive qualities depicting
continuity in relationship between culture and built form of the place. It highlights the
continuity of space to another and the background of the building structure.

B. Definition of Spaces

Carport
The primary purpose is to provide shelter for the family automobiles(s). It
may be small and simple, large and complex, attached to the house, or free standing.
a) Utilities Closet
A room within a house where equipment not used in day-to-day activities is
kept. "Utility" refers to an item which is designed for usefulness or practical use, so
in turn most of the items kept in this room have functional attributes.
Porch and Foyer
A large open area inside and near the entrance of a building and can be called
a lobby. It also serves as the reception area of a building or a transition area to change
temperature from the outside to the inside of the building.
Living Room
The living room is the main common space in most family homes. It used as
a sitting room for relaxing and socializing. Living room is also called as the front
room.
Dining Area

2
A Proposed Duplex Residence

It is the availability of some form of accommodation (seating, counters,

tables) for eating and drinking. This is, therefore, an area intended for the actual
consumption of food and drink.
Kitchen Area
It is an area with cooking facilities that enables the occupant to prepare and
cook food. It is usually the most expensive room in the house and receive the most
active use of any room.
Master’s Bedroom with T&B and Walk-in Closet
A principal bedroom house or apartment, usually the largest, typically
occupied by the person or persons who head the household.
a) Walk-in-Closet
It stands for Walk in Closet, a large space where the clothes of the
occupant are placed and is enough for a person to walk into.
Guest Bedroom
A Bedroom intended for a person who is invited to visit or stay in someone’s
home.
Children Bedroom
A child friendly bedchamber intended for babies, toddlers, and child in a
family used primarily for sleeping.
Powder Room
A room where a person can urinate and bowel, it does not have a bathtub or a
shower and usually intended for use by guests.
Common T&B
It is a bathroom shared by the occupants outside the room and is usually close
to the bedrooms of the guests.
Service Areas
It is an area that contains that supplements the Living and Dining area. It
supplements the equipment for maintenance, storage and service. The area is usually
close to the maid’s room and the kitchen.
a) Laundry
It is an intended area for washing the occupant’s clothes.
b) Drying Areas
It is an intended area for drying and hanging clothes.
Caretaker’s Quarters
Means any premises used by caretakers and watchmen employed to provide
services to the main building or lot.
a) Maid’s Room

3
A Proposed Duplex Residence

Those parts of a building, traditionally in a private house, which contain

the domestic offices and staff accommodation.
b) Living and Dining Area with Kitchenette
It is a small area intended for the maids to relax and prepare and eat
light meals.
Storage Areas
It is a dry storage area intended for storing supplements either for indoor or
outdoor use.

C. Latest Trends and Innovation

Convertible Ramps
The latest innovation of the
convertible ramps is a user-friendly
dual function mechanism with a
flight of functional stairs that
changes from stairs into ramps to
make the space accessible for
disabled and other users. The
mechanism has a low construction
cost that also requires minimal effort
to operate. Hence, it is easy and
efficient to all types of users.

Light wells

A light well is an architectural feature that can be used to take natural

light into the interior spaces of a building coming from the inside space
planning of the house. It takes the form of a vertical shaft within
the volume of a buildingthat typically penetrates from roof level down to
lower levels, allowing the transmission of natural light to areas that would
otherwise require artificial lighting. Light wells can also be used to
promote ventilation. Light wells may be open to the elements at the top,
with internal windowsaround its perimeter, or it may be open internally

4
A Proposed Duplex Residence

with glazing at the top. The advantages of light wells are that they can
reduce the electric lighting requirements of a building, as well as providing
an open space that can be used as an outdoor area or garden. Different
kinds of light wells can used in designing a building with it.

Glassdoors and Clerestory Windows

(Transparent, Transluscent or Frosted)

Considering the
space given for the
building natural
lighting is much
needed for a more
healthy and productive
environment for the
users. To bring more
light to the building
walls and solid doors
should be reduced.
Hence, from a solid
door it should be
replaced with glass
doors. However, too
much light can
transform into heat
and provides
discomfort to the users
Therefore, glass doors
should also be paired
also with frosted glass
doors to control the
light that comes in to
the building.
Furthermore, along with this clerestory windows is a non-traditional
window that helps in supplying light and ventilation which is a window
high up on a wall which is usually above eye level to have energy-efficient
building. Ideally, clerestory windows should be located on the sunny side
of a building, but still protected from the summer sun by rooflines, louvers,
overhangs, or other light-mitigating strategies. Clerestory windows can
also be a critical part in the passive cooling of a home, so the benefits are
multifold.

Smart Homes or Home Automation

Smart home technology,
also often referred to as home
automation or domotics,
provides homeowners security,
comfort, convenience and
energy efficiency by allowing
them to control smart devices,
often by a smart home app on
their smartphone or other
networked device. A part of
the internet of things (IoT),
smart home systems and devices
often operate together, sharing
consumer usage data among
themselves and automating
actions based on the homeowners' preferences. Domotics are also beneficial
for the elderly, providing monitoring that can help seniors to remain at home
comfortably and safely, rather than moving to a nursing home or requiring
24/7 home care. Home automation also helps consumers improve
efficiency. Instead of leaving the air conditioning on all day, a smart home
system can learn your behaviors and make sure the house is cooled down
by the time you arrive home from work.
Open Space Designs

Open-space design that encourages mingling of cooking, entertaining,

and family spaces has dominated residential architecture for the last few
decades, the trend is undergoing some changes in both residential and
commercial architecture. It prevents large rooms from looking flat and
boring by incorporating shifting of colors that helps with the determination
of space by the disabled person, to lessen the use of walls and doors to
consume space properly that will benefit the accessibility of the disabled
person and the use of daylight for the organization of space.
Environmental Sustainability

6
A Proposed Duplex Residence

In relation to other trends and Innovations sustainable architecture is a

complimentary addition to the technique or style to be used. meeting the
needs of the present without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their needs. So this means being smart with the
resources currently available and not depleting resources for generations of
people beyond us. sustainability is also a top concern for home buyers.
Consumers know the importance of reducing their carbon footprints, and
want to make sustainable choices that fit with their lifestyles

A. Green Walls or Vertical Gardens

7
A Proposed Duplex Residence

As time progresses cities becomes more crowded and fewer of the

community can have access to garden space and may have a big trouble
when it comes to natural ventilation. In today’s generation one innovative
solution is green walls or vertical gardens including rooftop farms, balcony
herb gardens and "junglefied" walls. Vertical gardens help to reduce the
carbon footprint of a building by filtering pollutants and carbon dioxide
out of the air, which also benefits those living nearby as the quality of the
air is improved. Exterior wall vertical gardens also help to The reduce heat
absorption, which can result in significant energy savings in areas where
people rely on air-conditioning during the warmer parts of the year.
Furthermore, vertical gardens or green walls helps disabled people like
ADHD to focus more, it speeds up recovery for patients through biophilia
and can boosts a person’s morale.

E. Conceptual Analysis
The use of Modern architecture as the building’s architectural style
with Greek revivalism as its inspiration can utilize the problem and the
project outline of the proposed duplex residence since Modern architecture
was based on new innovative technologies of construction to make the
building sustainable and can function as requested by clients. modern
architecture refers to design inspired by the historical art movement of
modernism. The use of these key elements are just some of the solutions
being brought by the architectural style to cater the needs of the occupants;
The first one is the open living spaces. The thought of having separate
rooms will imped the flow of living. Modernist homes usually feature open
floor plans that combine spaces for dining, relaxing and entertaining.
Second, is clean, geometric lines. It promotes the traditional arches and
columns -- modernist homes emphasize spare geometric forms. Third,
technologically advanced materials. Rather than traditional wood and
plaster, modernism advanced the use of new materials like iron, concrete,

14
A Proposed Duplex Residence

steel and glass. Lastly, Function over form. By the modernist pioneer Mies
van der Rohe Mies thought buildings (including homes) should be large
and open to accommodate any function, and then subdivided with movable
walls and screens. He believed the open space would foster a feeling of
community and camaraderie.
Modern homes were built to honor the concept of free-flowing space.
They exemplify highly functional living as well as a rejection of
sentimental ornaments and clutter. The modern movement came to be
criticized, however, because its slavish devotion to function ignored basic
human needs. For example, towering modern apartment complexes may be
a great use of vertical space, but their lack of natural greenery and
common areas tends to discourage human interaction. However,
redesigning the concept with new innovative technologies like light wells
can accommodate the problem of the style having common grounds or
space at the center of the residential building or unit. Utilitarian structures
were important for demonstrating the aesthetic potential of plain,
mass-produced objects. It generally embraced the aesthetic theory
of functionalism, deliberate use of this theory is not a prerequisite to
designing works that feature the modern aesthetic. Modern architecture
with some revisions when it comes to scenery or interior natural spaces
can give a concrete solution to the problem of the project.

H. Personal Concept and Philosophy

“Design must be rooted in reality and communicates a prominent function”

A lot of things go through an Architect’s mind but a good design

pursuits reality, it sees function. “Indifference towards people and the
reality in which they live is actually the one and only cardinal sin in
design” as Dieter Rams says. Without a deep understanding of the end user
and the reality in which a design will be used, any decision a designer
makes is a shot in the dark. Empathy is the conduit to great design
and the critical skill for great designers. To fill a real need, design must be
rooted in reality. For something to be “well designed” it could be simple, or
it could be complex. It could be considered aesthetically pleasing, or it
could be considered gaudy. Aesthetics and simplicity are bonus rewards.
For something to be well designed, the key requirement is that its function
must be obvious. A person should be able to easily determine how to use
and interact with it.

The Olympians Twins: The Night of the Hunters

In the ancient times, the Greeks had always been one of the greatest
contributors in the field of architecture. Furthermore, architectural
buildings or infrastructures was inspired and were for made the Greek
gods and goddesses. The Duplex Residence is inspired by the Olympian
Twins, born by the king of the gods Zeus and Leto, a daughter of the

18
A Proposed Duplex Residence

Titans Coeus and Phoebe and their twins are both hunters of the day and
night. The god of archery, music, truth, prophecy, the sun and light;
Apollo. The goddess of the hunt, wilderness, wild animals and the moon;
Artemis. The sun and the moon; this trump represents their conjunction or
unity. An image of that conjunction is the eclipse. Both of the opposite
persona, two contrasting supernaturals however, still united by blood and
ministry. The front facade of the house represents the Apollo’s qualities
where it fronts the east side of the residence which the sun rises.
Furthermore, the facade also came from the harp or lyre of the music god,
it makes use of the strings of the harp that can be used as the vertical
garden or the green wall that helps to have some natural ventilation for the
building. On the other hand, the back facade represents the moon goddess
where the sun sets in the west and that symbolizes the bow and arrow of
the goddess. With a tensile roofing on the roof deck of the building
designed to as the versatility of the goddess in the field of archery much
match with the wilderness qualities on its design. Hence, the design is the
conjunction of the twins that creates a well-balanced design that supports
the functional aspects of the infrastructure.

Both facade of the building faces the East and the West side because of this the design was
planned to place the Habitable rooms on the East side of the room to orchestrate the sunrise in the
morning and the Kitchen to the West side of the building to help kill bacteria because of the exposure
to heat and make it a sustainable living. However, The Master’s Bedroom was place in the West side to
have an advantage of the nice vista of the sunset during the evening. However, it does not compromise
the sun orientation because a Lightwell in the middle was established to secure Natural Lighting and
Ventilation at all times.

Openings like
Windows or Sliding doors
were used on the Northeast
and Southwest side of the
site since this will make use
of the monsoons to have a
well- ventilated building.
Natural greenery were also
used in the lightwell to help
relax and cool the building
from the sun exposure.
Lastly, few cut and fills
were done in the Site to
lessen the slope of the site.
