ACTIVITY 2
1. Get each person to write his or her own problem statement without conferring.
Compare each of the sentences/ looking for common themes and wording.
2. Start to write an improved statement using the common themes.
3. Ensure that the problems include the customer’s perspective
4. Ensure that the statement focuses on existing problems.
5. Try to include the time frame over which the problem has been occurring.
6. Try to quantify the problem. If you do not have the data to hand, defer writing the
final problem statement until you have been able to quantify the problem.
You should be able to apply the 5 'W's (Who, What, Where, When and Why) to the
problem statement.
A problem statement can be refined as you start to further investigate root cause.
Finally, review your new problem statement against the following criteria:
It should focus on only one problem.
It should be one or two sentences long.
It should not suggest a solution.
The staffing model in the Process Improvement Unit (PIU) has changed (we have
more staff, and some of the staff have different working patterns) we need to have a clear
way of recording status and stage of our business activities (projects, workshops and training)
that will be used by all PIU staff, so that we can work effectively and provide good service to
our customers. A member of staff is due to go on annual leave in two weeks’ time and we
have no visibility or way of easily sharing information about their work, this will make it hard
for the rest of the team to cover the work during staff absence.

ACTIVITY 3
A. Put a check (✓) on the space before the number if you think that the sentence is
CORRECT. Put a cross (X) if you think that it is not.
_______1. Scope and delimitations are two elements of a research paper or thesis.
_______2. The scope of a study explains the extent to which the research area will be
explored in the work and specifies the parameters within which the study will be
operating.
_______3. It is not possible for the researcher to cover every aspect of the topic.
_______4. The scope will have to be narrowed down to a certain section of the target
population.
_______5. The scope might be narrowed down to a group of 50 children in grades 3-5 of
one specific school. Their behavior patterns in school may have been observed
for a duration of 6 months. These would form the delimitations of the study.
_______6. Delimitations are the characteristics that limit the scope and describe the
boundaries of the study, such as the sample size, geographical location or
setting in which the study takes place, population traits, etc.
_______7. The researcher might also choose to use some research tools and
methodologies to collect data but not others.
_______8. Delimitations might be imposed for practical reasons; such as lack of time or
financial resources to carry out a more thorough investigation. The delimitation
section of the study should explain why specific choices were made while others
were excluded and how this might affect the outcome of the research.
_______9. The significance of the study is a part of the introduction of a thesis. It should
determine who benefits from the study and how that specific audience will
benefit from its findings.
_______10. The significance of the study could be simply reflected by the following two
questions: Why should my study be published? What significant scientific
contribution is my study making to my field of research.
_______11. The significance of the study should also be written with a non-expert in mind.
2. It pertains to the ability to know and obey relevant laws and institutional and
governmental policies.
a. Competence
b. Openness
c. Integrity
d. Legality
3. What is the word used in research in keeping your promises and agreement, acting
with sincerity; striving for consistency of thought and action?
