Analysing activation errors of single objects

Created by Laszlo Herbert, last modified on Mar 17, 2016

Symtom
In the ACT_UPG phase activation errors of single objects were reported

Error example:

Checks after phase MAIN_SHDRUN/ACT_UPG were negative!

Last error code set: Detected 480 errors summarized in 'ACTUPG.ELG'<br/>
Calling '/upgrade/SUM/abap/exe/tp' failed with return code 8, check
/upgrade/SUM/abap/log/SAPup.ECO for details<br/> tp used shadow connect

Solution

Remark! Handling activation errors is also described in the corresponding SUM Guide Chapter Correcting Errors in the ACT_UPG Phase

1. Repeat the phase by selecting Continue. In this case only unfinished activations will be restarted and errors
related to cyclic dependencies can be eliminated, see as example the
SAP note 2086899 - Upgrade phase MAIN_SHDRUN/ACT_UPG returns error messages
2. Find the object(s) with activation error
3. Find the responsible of the objects with activation error
4. If you have identified the object and it is a customer object (See an example in the SAP KBA 2096453 )
or an SAP standard object changed by customer (change request),
a. Contact the customer's responsible developer/application expert and execute the needed changes
b. Save the changes in a transport request. Check if an SPDD transport is already available and save the
change under that change request.
Do not activate the object , see SAP note 2045835 - SE11 Activation in a Shadow System Must be
Prevented
c. If the object owner confirms, that the activation error can be ignored, ignore the error by selecting
Accept .
5. If you have identified the object and it is an SAP standard object without customer modification/change
request
a. Go through the page SAP notes related to specific activation errors to find the solution.
b. Save the changes in a transport request. Check if an SPDD transport is already available and save the
change under that change request.
Do not activate the object , see SAP note 2045835 - SE11 Activation in a Shadow System Must be
Prevented
c. If an SAP note describes, that the activation error can be ignored, ignore the error by selecting Accept .
