floated on the line in parallel with it. Assuming constant speed and excitation for both generators,

11. Repeat (9) while the excitation of the machines stands altered such that the generated voltages of A & B
are 118V and 128V respectively.

EE2006D ELECTRICAL MACHINES I
(Assignment-2: to be submitted on or before 06.03.2020)

1. The shunt winding of a 500kW dc compound generator is designed to develop 500V at no load. Its
temperature at no load is 20˚C and it rises to 60˚C on full load. Estimate the number of series turns per
pole for the machine, required to develop 500V at no load and 550V at full load, the requisite ampere-turns
per pole being 7900 and 11200 respectively.
2. Find the no-load and full-load speeds and the speed regulation expressed as a percentage of the no-load
speed, for the 4-pole, 220V, 24h.p. shunt motor having the following data. Field current-5A, armature
resistance-0.04, flux-40mWb, armature conductors-160, 2-circuit wave connection, full-load current-95A
and no-load current-9A. Neglect armature reaction.
3. A 250V shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.5 and a field resistance of 250. When driving a
600rpm load, the torque of which is constant, the armature takes 20A. If it be desired to raise the speed
from 600rpm to 800rpm, what resistance must be inserted in the shunt field circuit, assuming the
magnetization curve to be a straight line.
4. A 220V shunt motor with an armature resistance of 0.5 is excited to give constant main field. At full-
load the motor runs at 500rpm and takes an armature current of 30A. If a resistance of 1 is placed in the
armature circuit, find the speed at (a) full load torque and (b) double full load torque. (c) Find also the
stalling torque.
5. A 500V, 10h.p. shunt motor has a full load efficiency of 85%. With the same field and armature currents it
is desired to reduce the speed by 30% by insertion of resistance in the armature circuit. Assuming that all
losses except copper losses vary directly with the speed, calculate the value of the inserted resistance and
the efficiency of the motor when running at the reduced speed. The resistances of the field and armature
circuits are 400 and 0.25 respectively.
6. A 100h.p. 500V shunt motor has 4 poles and a 2 circuit wave connected armature winding with 492
conductors. The flux is 50mWb per pole and the full load efficiency is 92%. The armature and commutating
pole windings have a total resistance of 0.1. The shunt field resistance is 250. Calculate (a) the speed
and (b) the useful torque at full load.
7. A 240V series lift motor has a resistance of 0.2. At a speed of 1800rpm, it takes 40A. Find the
resistance to be added (a) to limit the speed to 3600rpm when the current is 10A, assuming that flux is
proportional to current between 10A and 40A, (b) to make the speed 900rpm when the current is 60A,
given that the flux at 60A is 18% greater than that at 40A. At what speed will the motor run when
connected directly to the mains, taking 60A?
8. A 4-pole series wound fan motor runs normally at 600rpm on a 250V supply, taking 20A. All the field coils
are connected in series. Estimate the speed and the current taken by the motor, if the coils are
reconnected in two parallel groups of two coils each in series. The load torque increases as the square of
the speed. Assume that the flux is directly proportional to the current and losses are negligible.
9. A 440V shunt motor takes an armature current of 30A and delivers a mechanical output of 15hp, while
running at 1500rpm. If the load torque varies as the square of the speed, calculate the value of the
resistance to be inserted in the armature circuit for reducing the motor speed to 1300rpm and the
armature current at that speed.
10. When Hopkinson’s test was conducted on 2 identical 230V dc shunt machines, their armature currents were
37A and 30A and field currents were 0.85A and 0.8A. If each of the machines has an armature resistance
of 0.33, calculate their efficiencies.
11. Find the values of the 6 sections of an automatic starter for a 220V, dc shunt motor having an armature
resistance of 0.5, such that the armature current does not exceed 40A.
