REFLECTION ON READING

1. How will I know that I have carried out enough pre-reading task to prepare
my students for reading?

Pre-reading is activity reading an article, basic frameworks which are included

in the text should be pointed out such as cause-effect or problem-solution. It
can be beneficial to call attention to specific plans of paragraphs or text
organization such as signal words, main idea sentences, questioning, headings
and prior knowledge activities. Main idea to build connection what will they
are going to read.

When my pupils have a purpose for reading a selection, they find that purpose
not only directs their reading towards a goal, but helps to focus their attention.
Purposes may come from me directed questions, questions from class
discussions or brainstorming, or by the individual student. Along with the
question, I will pose predictions of the outcome and problems which need to
be solved. These may be generated by the pupils or me, but I should use these
to guide students in the needed direction for the assigned selection.

2. How can student assessment help in my teaching?

For me, the best classroom assessments also serve as meaningful sources of
information for me, helping pupils identify what they taught well and what they
need to work on. This information will improve my teaching style. I need to
make a simple tally of how my pupils missed each assessment item or failed to
meet a specific criterion. For me, assessment will expose pupils’ weakness that
is the point I have to work on it.
3. What can I change in my reading class?

Since I have learned pre-reading is important here, I will implement this activity
in my classroom. I will read an article about them, then they will get each copy
of the article each. The main problem in my class is most of my pupils able to
read, but they don’t understand the meaning of that article. According to
Stahl (1999), if we familiar with 107 regular English words, then we able to
understand the whole article. My next strategy, I want my pupils to get familiar
with those 107 words so it’s going to be easier for them to understand English
better and better.
