southeast is
bohol province. It is flanked on both sides by the straits of Cebu ( between Cebu and Bohol ) and Tanon
(between Cebu and Negros).
Cebu is subdivided into nine cities and 44 municipalities and these are:Bogo City, Carcar City, Cebu City,
Danao city, Lapu-lapu City, Mandaue City, Naga City, Talisay City, Toledo City,. the municipalities are;
Alcantara, Alcoy, Alegria, Aloguinsan, Argao, Asturias, Badian, Balamban, Bantayan, Barili, Boljoon,
Borbon, Carmen, Catmon, Compostela, Consolacion, Cordova, Daanbantayan, Dalagueta, Dumanjug,
Ginatilan,Liloan, Madridejos, Malabuyoc, Medellin, Minglanilla, Moalboal, Naga , Oslob, pilar,
Pinamungahan, Poro, San Fernando, San Francisco, Sa Remegio,Santa Fe,Santader,
Sibonga,Sogod,Tabogon,Tabuelan, Tuburan, Tudela, Ronda and Samboan.
History says: A flotilla of 5 ships with a crew of 237 sailed out of Seville,Spain on August 10,1519 with
Portuguese Explorer Fernando De Magallanes. After that on March 16,1521 his patience and
determination when he sighted the land for the first time. March 25, 1521 mark Magellan’s discovery of
Limasawa Island in Leyte where the fire and the first Christian mass was held and then first Christianity
was done also in Cebu.
We can access the place by Riding in any types of transportation by Land, Air and Sea but the most
efficient is to use air transportation like Aeroplane.

Magellan Cross, Fort San Pedro ,Heritage of Cebu Monument, Magellan Marker ,Colon Street, Lapu lapu

– Magellan cross where the first Christians Filipinos, Raja Humabon and Queen Juana and about
400 followers, were baptized by Fr. Pedro Valderama. Fort San Pedro considered as the smallest,
oldest tri- bastion fort in the country. This served as the nucleus of the Spanish settlement in the
Philippines. Heritage of Cebu monument it showcases the significant and symbolic events in the
history of Cebu from the time of Raja Humabon to the recent beatification of Cebuano martyr
Pedro Calunsod.it is called Magellan Marker because before Magellan reach the shore, he was
killed by island chieftain Lapu lapu and his men during the battle for supremacy and freedom on
April 27, 1521.
– The colon street is the oldest street in the Philippines that was built by the Spaniards in the time
of Miguel Lopez de Legaspi. Lau lapu monument where It depicts the hero holding a bolo in one
hand and pestle on the other. And it symbolizes the Filipino bravery.
– University of San Agustin is the oldest school in the country that is established in year 1565.The
Capitol Building where the provincial government seats.
University of San Carlos Museum (P.del Rosario St.,Cebu City) The University of San Carlos Museum was
founded in 1967 by the late German, Fr. Rudolf Rahmann. The Museum is composed of four galleries (1)
Spanish Colonial Gallery, (2) the ethnographic Gallery(3) the Archaeological Gallery (4) Natural Science
Gallery Ethnographic materials from the Buhid Mangyans of Mindoro whichs ws first collected in 1953
by Dr.Marcelino Maceda andconcequently was followed by field collection by him and Fr.Rahmann on
the material culture of the Negritos of Antique.
Kota Park (Bantayan) is located north of the island of Bantayan in the town of Madridejos.The park was
built in the 1790’s as a Spanish front (Kota Fort) and was used to protects the locals from pirates and
Spanish militiamen
Balay na Tisa (Carcar) Also called “House of Tiles “The Balay na tisa is considered one of the towns
valuable treasures. Inside the house one can find priceless antiques from silver and ceramic dinnerware
to the wooden poster beds, cabinets, tables, and chairs.
– Basilica Minor del Santo Nino This church was built by Miguel Lopez de Legaspi and
Fr.Andres Urdaneta on the site where the image of Santo Nino was found in 1565.The
first structure of the church was however destroyed by fire on November 1568.
– Image of Santo Nino Considered as the oldest religious relic in the Philippines. It was on
April 21, 1521 that Magellan gave the image to Queen Juana as a baptismal gift. Forty
four years later, on April 27, 1565, when Miguel Lopes de Legaspi arrived in
Cebu,Fr.Andres de Urdaneta, who formally Christianized the Cebuanos, found the
natives hostile.
– Taoist temple The temple preserves the teaching of Lao-Tse the 600 B.C Chines
philosopher.Everyday people climb its 81 steps(representing the 81 chapters of Taoism
scriptures) to light joss sticks and have their fortune read.
– Phu-sian Temple A Buddhist temple, the third Chinese temple on Beverly hills located
at the right side of the road to the Taoist Temple.
– Chapel of the Last Supper. Life –sized carvings of the Lord Jesus and his 12 Apostles seated at a
long table for the last supper. This is the only one of its kind in the country. This treasured relic is
found in the Church of Mandaue City that dates back to 1601.
– Celestial Garden (Banawa Hills,Cebu City) Owned and managed by the Tanchan foundation.
Twelve hectares of rolling hills where life-size statues depicting the drama of the Stations of the
Cross were built.
– Boljoon Church (Boljoon) is the oldest remaining original stone church in Cebu. The interior on
the church shows old and intricate carvings. It is in pseudo-baroque rococo style.

– Festivals
– Sinulog Festival every 3rd Sunday of January;province wide) Cebu biggest and most popular
festival.The feast is in the honor of the Holy Image of Senyor Santo Nino de Cebu.FiestaSenyor,
as it is widely known, is the most celebrated among Cebu’s festivals, where people coverage
along the routes of a grand solemn procession and partake in the gaiety amidst a madri gras
parade immersed in wild colors and the constant beating of drums.
– Tagbo (January; Poro, Camotes Island) Celebrated in honor of the Patron Santo Nino de Poro.
Beloved memoir of a living past, Tagbo is the cornerstone from which this great municipality has
sprung. Rich in cultural heritage and deep in spiritual values. Tagbo is a very significant event
preluding the birth of a town very dear to the hearts of her sons and daughters.
– Kadaungan sa Mactan(April 27.,Lapulapu City) A one day re- enactment celebrated with pomp
and pageantry every 27th of April to commemorate the historic battle of Mactan between the
forces of Lapulapu and Ferdinand Magellan.
– Cassava Festival (June 10-11, Camotes Island) Held with the aim of creating awareness
among the people on the different uses and economic opportunities offered by cultivating
cassava.
– Barangayan (June 12, countryside) An annual celebration of Philippine independence
held every June 12.
– Dinagat Festival (August 5; Cordova) The festival is characterized by street dancing and
interpretative dance competition based on the fishing rituals and culture of the
Cordovahanons.
– Nuestra Senora de Regla Fiesta (20-21;Lapulapu City)Held to honor the patrones of
opon. This religious and social events reveals the deep religious faith of the people and
their penchant for merry making. A food fair, carnival processing and a coronation of the
fiesta Queen highlight the festivity.
– Carcar fiesta (24-25; Carcar) Celebrated in the honor of the town’s patron.St.Catherine
of Alexandria. Carcar town is noted for its old Spanish style houses in the quiet
countryside setting. During fiestas, the resident would invite friend’s relatives and town
visitors into their homes to taste popular local delicacies. A lively and enjoyable events.
– Pasko sa Sugbo (December; Province side) An annual celebration by lighting and decorating the
main throughout in Cebu, starting from capitol down to Plaza Independencia.
– Sanayon (Variables dates;Cebu City) Agro tourism festival in the southern town of the second
district about 100 kilometers from the city. A month–long activity to spread out tourism to the
countryside
– Via crusis (Lent [Banawa Hills; Cebu City) A Lenten activity where devotees do their penitential
procession through the Stations of the Cross built on 12 hectares of rolling hills
– Pasko sa Kasakit (Holy Thursday and Good Friday [Variables dates;Bantayan Island) A religious
procession of life-size image of the death and passion of Jesus Christ carried in richly decorated
and lighted carrozas.

– Procuct and Delicacies
– Cebu is known for its guitars, Guitar making is the occupation of the people of Mactan
District and Maribago City District in Lapu lapu City.
– Cebu is also known not only famous for the fresh mangoes but its export quality dried
mangoes. Also known are local bakery products like otap rosquillos, lengua de gato,
dried fish, danngit, posit, lapu-lapu chicharon from carcar, dried beef tapa,longganisa etc.
– Marine products, fresh and dried are very popular pasalubong from Cebu.

– Oriental Negros the Capital is Dumanguete City Negros occupies the south-eastern half of
occidental Island of Negros, with Negros Occidental comprising the north western half. It also
includes Apo Island a popular dive site for both local and foreign tourists. Negros Oriental faces
to the east across the tanon Strait and Siquijor to the south east. Oriental Negros is subdivided
into 19 municipalities and six cities these are:Bais City, Bayawan City, Canlaon City, Dumanguete
City, Guihulngan City, Yanjay City. Alman, Ayungon, Bacong, Basay, Bindoy, Dauin, Jumalalud,

– History says the Negros Island is believed to have once been part of the island of Mindanao, but
was cut-off-either by continental drift or the rising waters at the end of ice age. Among the early
inhabitants of the island were dark skinned peoples belonging to the Negrito ethnic group, as well
as Han Chinese and Malays. They called the island “Buglas” a native word which is believed to
mean “cut-off ”

– By Air. It is the one hour and 15 minutes by plane from manila, and 40 minutes from Cebu to
Dumanguete City. There are daily directs flights from manila
– By Sea. There are also daily sea voyages to and from different points in the Visayas and
Mindanao and twice a week to and from Manila.

– Looc Memorial Shrine (Sibulan) Marks the site of the first World War II encounters in
Negros Oriental, on October 11, 1942, when independent partisan guerilla groups joined
forces.
– Fil-Am Jap Amity Shrine (Valencia) A three- sided pillar soars above a viewing deck
on the Sangbang hilltop where Filipino, American, and Japanese soldiers clashed in a
fierce encounter during World War II in Oriental Negros.
– Spanish Fountain (Valencia) Devised by an Augustian friar to spout water channeled
from a highland spring, the fountain is now the centerpiece of the sunken Valencia
Municipal Plaza.
– Cata-al War Memorabilia (Valencia) Relics of the World War II encounter in Oriental
Negros include Japanese and American materials and personal effects, preserved as part
of the private collection of the Cata-al family in Valencia.

– Fleur-de-Lis Hall (Dumaguete city) Housed at St.Paul College, it is noted for its lavish

– Mariyab Gallery (Dumaguete City) -Central Venue of Oriental Negros’ visual artist, an
extensive inventory of Books of Filipino authors are also found at the gallery.
– Sinco Memorabilia Museum (Dumaguete City) - Repository of works and personal
effects of Vicente G. Sinco, a signatory of UN charter. Also houses an exhibit of objects
d’art and crude implements of early Negrenses. Established in 1949 by Dr. Sinco as his
masterwork, the museum is located in Foundation University.
– Siliman University Ethno-Antro Museum (Dumaguete City)-Exhibits of artifacts and
archaeological finds dating some 2,000 years back;also showcases an ethnographic
collection from the country’s tribal monirities.
– Siliman University Library (Dumanguete City) - Largest collection of books and
publications in the province, with ample space for regular exhibits.
– Negros Oriental Arts and Heritage (Bacong)- Export-quality stone craft items are
manufactured here.

Mina’s Undersea World (Zamboanguita ) is 200 yards from the beach, a veritable marine garden for
snorkeling and swimming. In this area are water tanks with white sea turtles and other marine
creatures.
Banica Swimming Lagoon (Valencia) Two river fed swimming pools in the garden setting, with
restrooms and canteen.It is a favorite hangout of picnic goers due to its proximity to Dumanguete City.
Pasaka-an Spring (Mabinay) A poblacion landmark spring –fed lake amid a forested area, ideal for
picnics and bathing.The spring is the town’s main source of potable water.
San Isidro Hot Spring (Tanjay) Hot Spring bordered by mangroves,located in Barangay San Isidro.
Inyawan Enchanted Falls (Canlaon City) Flows 100 feet off Inyawan River at the edge of a forest. Cold
and clear waters cascade downstream to join Masaulog River.
Ouiapot Falls (Canlaon City) Bottle-shaped water cascade about 100 feet. largest of three neighboring
waterfalls fed by the Binalbagan,Malaiba,and Linothangan tributaries.Deep basin ideal for swimming
and boating.
– Pulang Bato Falls (Valencia) Cool clear waters cascading over reddish rock formations
creating an awesome two toned waterfalls.

– Casaro Falls (Valencia) Cool waters cascade down to a swimming basin, almost
enclosed by step precipices and lush vegetation. Hikers traverse an adventurous nature
trail. Considered the province’s most photographed falls.

– Balanan (Sandulot Siaton) A vast mountain retreat developed around a lake. Explore
relax to birdsong and water music.

– White Sand Bar (Manjuyod) A 7-kilometer –long strip of white sand beach in the
middle of North Bais Bay.

– Canlaon Volcano One of the tallest peaks in the Visayas, the volcano raised canlaon
City’s skyline to 8,085 feet above sea level. A favorite spot of intrepid mountain climbers
the still active volcano can be accessed from canlaon city 165.7 km from Dumanguete
City.

– Makawiwili Ridge (Canlaon City) Also known as the” saddle in the sky "the ridge is
located between two mountain peaks 8,000 feet above sea level, and frequently used by
scientists as a vantage point in observing the two craters of Canlaon Volcano.

– Mt. Talinis (Valencia) oriental negros prominent peaks, the Cuermos de Negros or Horns
of Negros rise 5,095 feet above sea level and are situated nine kilometer southwest of
Valencia.

– Cayaso Cave (Mabinay) An underground river located one kilometer from the poblacion
Municipal Hall. Three kilometers long and six feet wide, the cave goes 20 feet down a
winding stone pathway leading to an underground river of potable drinking water but
without a visible outlet.

– Mabinay Cave (Mabinay)Some 32 minor and major caves identified by a Dutch-
Belgian expedition in 1990.Awe-inspiring limestone formations and underground rivers
await spelunkers.

– Pandaliban Cave (Mabinay) Stalactites and stalagmites abound in this cave which is
accessible by foot. Cave tours can be arranged with the Tirambulo Highland Resort in
Paniabonan, Mabinay.

forest which is a natural habitat and nesting place of birds and other wildlife.Accessible

lounging; right in front of the imposing Capitol building.

and memorial houses and some of the elegant dining establishments of the city.

– Sidlakang Negros Showroom (Dumaguete City) Main shop of Oriental Negros arts and
crafts; it’s branch, Products of Negros Oriental is situated on Noblefranca St.; run by the
Oriental Negros Entrepreneurs Assoviation (NOREA), makers of gift and novelty items,
household and décor accessories, garments, basketry, souvenir shirts, and delicacies.
– Universal Robina/Sugar Milling Company (Manjuyod) Established as Oriental
Negros’ most modern sugar mill, also with an oil mill for copra produced by the northern
district.
– Mayon Zigzag (Canlaon City) Portion of highway from the junction of Barangay
Bagawines where the road ascends in a zigzag, affording a changing panoramic view of
the blue waters of Tanon Strait and the Island of Cebu, and hugging the foothill dwelling
of farmers that appear like toy houses surrounded by cornfields.
– Veranda of the World (Zamboanguita) Located in Salngan II; picnic and camping area
with head-on view of the face of Mt. Talinis and mini terraces for trekking.
– Zoo Paradise of the World (Zamboanguita) Set in an ipil-ipil forested area, it is Fr.
Eleuterio Tropa’s collection of live and stuffed wildlife, memorabilia, and ecological
conversation action during his lifetime. Located in the Salngan 1 camp grounds.

– RELIGIOUS STUCTURE
– Church of St. Agustine of Hippo and and Pipe Organ (Bacong) Completed in 1865
and situated by the sea. Main altar repeated to br the province’s oldest and it’s pipe organ
from Zaragao,Spainwas installed in 1894 through the efforts of its first parish priest, Rev.
Joaquin Soriano.
– Dumanguete Belfry or Campanario Erected in 1811 as bell tower of the Cathedral of
St. Catherine of Alexandria and watchtower to forewarn town folks of impending attack
of marauders.
– Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine (San Jose) In the cane fields of Cambaluctot, where a
spinning sun is said to have manifested the visit of the Lady of Lourdes, devotes flock
every Saturday of the Month.
– San Antonio de Padua (Sibulan) St. Athony’s devotes from all over the province crowd
at the Sibulan church to light candles for the patron saint every 13th of each month.
– Daro Sinulo (3rd week of January; Dumaguete City) The traditional festival in barangay
Daro is held in honor of the Infant Jesus. The barangay’s various “puroks” participates as
“tribus” (tribes).
– Buglasan (May 4; Dumaguete City) The festival of festivals, Buglasan brings together
the finest street dancers of the province for a day of competition and merrymaking. Other
activities include an agri-tourism fair, pageants, and musical variety shows.
– Ayuquitan Festival (May 7; San Jose) The town’s name is derived from inukitan or bird
pickings, recounted in colorful production numbers.
– Fluvial Procession of Sibulan (June 12; Sibulan) Percedes the June 13 fiesta of
St.Anthony de Padua. Lighted and decorated vessels ferry the saint’s image and devotees
along the waters off the town, which attracts mammoth crowds of supplicants to the
patron’s shrine in the parish church.
– Sinulog de Tanjay (June 24; Tanjay City) Street dancing and a mock battle between the
Moros and Christians, followed by their reconciliation through the intercession of town
patron Senor Santiago, held on the eve of the patron’s feast day.
– Budyas (June 29; Tandayag, Amlan) Traditional ritual invokes good fortune on
fishermen their boats and paraphernalia; fluvial procession of elaborately decorated
vessels ferry patrons St. Peter and St. Paul between the two chapels of Tandayag.
– Hudyaka Festival (September 7; Bais City) Highlight of the Bais City fiesta and charter
Day celebration; features street dancing and mardi gras with showdown competition and
grand floats.
– Balik Lantaw sa Amlan (November 28; Amlan) A dance festival depicting the folk
ways of Amlan.
– Hugyawan Dalansayaw (December; Dumaguete City) Hugyawan means
“merrymaking” and is the main concept of the celebration and street dancing
presentations, with contingets coming from all parts of the province.
– Kasadyaan Festival / Foundation University Founder’s Day (December 12-14;
Dumaguete city) Initiated by Foundation University to add color to the local
Community’s Christmas season.

– Product,Delicacies
–
– Being part of the Negros island, Sugar is the main produce as well as rice and corn.
Budbod kabog is a local delicacy made from ground rice, coconut milk and sugar
steamed to perfection. Christmass decor from the town of Tanjay, dried fish and
moscovado sugar abound. Local sans rival cakes are also a good pasalubong from
Dumaguete City.
