CASE STUDY

“CHONDROSARCOMA”

I. Introduction
Did you know that the chondrosarcoma is a malignant tumor composed of
cartilage-producing cells. They usually arise in the pelvis or long bones.Primary
or conventional chondrosarcoma arises in preexisting normal bone and is
distinguished from the rarer secondary tumors, which occur in a preexisting
enchondroma or osteochondroma .Its so interesting because like us we didn’t take
care of our bones and body. And we didn’t know that this type of disease is a
malignant tumor.

II. Definition of Disease

A malignant tumor that forms in cartilage cells (chondroplasts) and that
produces cartilage matrix. Chondrosarcoma can be primary or secondary. Primary
chondrosarcoma forms in bone and is found in children. Secondary
chondrosarcoma arises from preexisting benign defects of cartilage (such as an
osteochondroma or enchondroma), usually after age 40. Treatment is mainly by
surgery.

III. Physiology

Chondrosarcoma is a collective term for a group of tumors that consist

predominantly of cartilage and that range from low-grade tumors with low metastatic
potential to high-grade, aggressive tumors characterized by early metastasis. See the
image below.Symptoms of chondrosarcoma may vary depending on the location of the
tumor. The following are the most common symptoms of chondrosarcoma. However,
each individual may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:Large
mass on the affected bone , Feeling of pressure around the mass . Pain that increases
gradually over time. It is usually worse at night and may be relieved by taking
anti-inflammatory medicines, such as ibuprofen. It is not usually relieved through
rest.Pain that is usually worse at night and may be relieved by taking anti-inflammatory
medicines, such as ibuprofen , Local swelling

IV. Management

The following are treatment options for chondrosarcoma. Your healthcare team will
suggest treatments based on your needs and work with you to make a treatment
plan.A dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma tumour is treated like an osteosarcoma
tumour because it is a more aggressive type of chondrosarcoma.
Surgery is the main treatment for most types of chondrosarcoma. It may be used for
tumours that are newly diagnosed and tumours that come back (recur). The following
types of surgery may be used.Radiation Theraphy - External beam radiation therapy
may be used to treat chondrosarcoma that can’t be removed with surgery. It may also
be used to destroy any cancer cells left behind after a wide resection or limb-sparing
surgery. Radiation therapy is also used for recurrent chondrosarcoma.Chemotheraphy
- Chemotherapy is not used for low-grade chondrosarcoma because it has not been
shown to help improve survival.

V. Conclusion
As a student who study this type of disease , I know that this disease is a
bone cancer and I found out that the chondrosarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal
tumor origination from cartilage. As a senior high student and im knowledgable in
this topic , so this disease can help us if we got this type of disease and we know what
will do if we got it.Being a senior high student is hard but if you study hard like
studying this type of disease you will learn something from it.
