Over TWO THOUSAND YEARS AGO, Plato wrote that the most important task of
educators is to teach young people to “find pleasure in the right things”. Try as they might, most of
those working with teenagers in high schools today are finding this difficult to accomplish. The
sometimes vibrant, and highly commercialized, youth culture in which many teenagers find their
pleasures seems far removed indeed from the traditions and requirements of school, or the habits
of mind needed for serious study and intellectual growth.

Living in a big city exposes a person to a fast-paced way of living. Living this way may
cause one to lose sight of the things that add value to life like relationships. My own mother, for
instance, missed a few important moments in my childhood while we were living in a big city.
Because she had not enough time for me on the weekdays, she rarely had dinner with me or helped
me do my homework. As an adult, I understand why my mother had to work in a big city, that is, to
give me a comfortable life. However, I cannot help but think that my mother and I could have had a
closer relationship if only we lived in a smaller city.

submitting to two universities. I wanted to take up fine arts but my parents intervened. They told me to
take up an engineering course instead. They assured me that painting and sketching can always be

am a civil engineer who also paints portraits for art exhibits.

sentence. “My parents insisted on guiding me in filling out the college application forms that I was
submitting to two universities.”
B. I agree with the part of the passage wherein the parents respect the passion of their child, and
this is shown in the sentence “They assured me that painting and sketching can always be my
hobby.”
C. I agree with the content of the passage especially with the sentence “They assured me that
painting and sketching can always be my hobby, and a stable job will be my safety net” as having
a stable job is a practical choice and at the same time one still gets to do what he or she loves.
D. I like the passage because it reminds me of a similar conversation I just had with my parents
when they found out I was applying for a university just like in the sentence “My parents insisted
on guiding

29. The present study aims to investigate the effects of Aesthetics English comic books on EFL junior high
school students’ vocabulary acquisition, reading comprehension, and English learning motivation. The
participants in this study were 28 eighth graders from one class in a public junior high school in
Pingtung in Taiwan. After ten weeks instruction of comic books, students take two tests and a post-
study questionnaire. Based upon the quantitative and qualitative data analysis, the findings of the
present study are summarized as follows. First of all, all of them significantly improved their amount of
vocabulary after the comic-book reading program (CBRP). As for the contrast between the HG and the
LG, the former outperformed the latter and the result reached a significant difference. Second, based on
their scores from the reading pretest to the post-test, all of them enhanced their reading comprehension
ability posterior to the CBRP and the result reached a significant difference. Third, according to the
analysis of the questionnaires, up to 86% of them think it is a good way to apply English comic books to
English instruction; about 79% of them agreed that they like to read English comic books better than
before. On the basis of the study findings, the comic book-reading program can indeed enhance
students’ vocabulary acquisition, reading comprehension as well as their learning motivation

30. Based upon the quantitative and qualitative data analysis, the findings of the present study are
summarized as follows. First of all, according to the participants’ scores from the vocabulary pretest to
the post-test, all of them significantly improved their amount of vocabulary after the comic-book reading
program (CBRP). As for the contrast between the HG and the LG, the former outperformed the latter
and the result reached a significant difference. Meanwhile, the difference also reached a statistical
significance. That is, the program did improve the subjects’ vocabulary acquisition. The striking
improvement mainly resulted from the pleasure of reading comics, abundant contextualization and
curricular practices.

enhancement of student centeredness, self-confidence, and positive attitudes towards reading in EFL
contexts. This quantitative study was conducted during the first semester of 2012 at INA, Centro de
Formación Profesional Cuidad Quesada, San Carlos, Costa Rica. To this end, twenty two students
aged between 17 and 32 years old taking a conversational English course for customer service were
selected. Thirteen were female and nine were male, all of them Costa Rican and with an intermediate
proficiency level. The majority of them were full-time students; that is, they had no job or family
commitments that would interfere with their academic endeavors, except for three of them who worked
part time and were taking the course at the same time they worked too. Lastly, all the participants had
completed secondary school.

Make a three-sentence report based on the given data on the table above (For numbers 33 and 35)

Read Alvin Toffler’s “Things: the Throw-Away Society.”

The Teacher could spark up interest in the Author Ever heard of the best-seller Alvin Toffler? He “burst
into the limelight in 1970 with the publication of Future Shock, a book that caught the spirit of the age with its
challenging vision of a society being torn apart by the ‘premature arrival of the future.’ It became a worldwide
best seller. Since then, he and his wife Heidi (who recently owned up to her half of the creative effort and put
her name on their books too) have published a string of influential books.
The Third Wave (1980) and Power Shift (1990) form a trilogy with Future Shock. Each one and the
Tofflers' most recent book, War and Anti-War, takes a different lens to explore the technological and culture
forces shaping the future. Although the Tofflers are often thought of as the world's most famous
futurologists, two words that are definitely not in their vocabulary are predict and trend. "We believe nobody
can predict the future," says Alvin. "We'll read the stuff that comes out of mathematical models, but we'll
read it with a degree of skepticism. What we have constructed is a model of historical and social change."
The transforming power of technology always plays a central role in the Tofflers’ books, but their first
love was not science. Both studied English at New York University and then plunged into the Bohemian
world of post-war Greenwich Village, writing poetry and planning novels. ``I was your typical liberal arts
student. Math and science were absolutely the subjects that gave me the most difficulty. But for some
reason, I knew at a very young age that technology was important, that science was important, and so I took
a course in the history of technology and then read, read and read.''

36-40. What is the thesis of the essay?

41-45. Do you agree or disagree with this thesis? Why?

46-48. How does Toffler’s use of the Barbie doll aid in developing his main point?

49-50. What human-made things enter into and color” your life? (What values toward material objects have
become parts of your life?)
