1. What is the shape of the rectangle of given area that has the longest diagonal?
Solution:
L2 =x2 + y2
2LL’ = 2x + 2yy’ = 0
y’ = -x/y
A= xy
dA/dx = xy’ + y (1) = 0
y’ = -y/x
-x/y = -y/x
x=y

2. The hypotenuse of a right triangle is 20 cm. What is the maximum possible area of the triangle in
sq. cm. ?
Solution:
X2 + y2 = 400
2x + 2yy’ = 0
y’ = -x/y
A= xy/2
A’ = (1/2)(xy’+y(1)) = 0
y’ = -y/x
-x/y = -y/x
x=y
A= xy/2
A = 14.142 / 2
A = 100 cm2
3. The hypotenuse of the right triangle is 20 cm. Determine the perimeter that will make its area
minimum.
Solution
X2 +y2 = 400
2x + 2yy’ = 0
y’ = -x/y
A= xy/2
A’= ½ [xy’ + y(1)] = 0
-y/x = -x/y
X2 + x2 = 400
X= 14.14

P = 2(14.14) + 20
P = 48.28 .
