A Study of Two TPE’s

 My Showcase ITL 516 February 2, 2020

Note: The two examples of my work are attached to this page of my Showcase. There are three
separate sections of SCRIBD docs on this Showcase page (TPE 4 and TPE 6- ITL516):

1. There is an introduction and argument for the chosen TPE’s 4 and 6,

3. The final item is the observation PDF of Mr. Brown’s 5th grade class.

The assignment calls for the selection of artifacts from the course to clearly demonstrate
evidence of progression with California teaching expectations (TPE’s) In this regard I
have chosen TPE 4 and TPE 6.

Planning Instruction and Designing Learning Experiences for students is what ITL 516
was all about. This happens to be defined best in element 3 of TPE 4 “Design and
implement instruction and assessment.” My second favorite task was actually watching
an experienced teacher Mr. Brown teach his fifth grade class mathematics specifically
word problems with fractions. It was a great experience to see Mr. Brown actually using
the techniques of modeling, the four “C”’s, use of visual aids, and methodical
development of student use of their models. He positive, professional, and created an
environment for everyone to learn in. Most of his lecture was exactly what my ITL516
professor was already lecturing on. Observation and coaching I believe are two keys to
design and implement instruction element #3 of TPE 4.

TPE 6 is Developing as a Professional Educator and nowhere is that more apparent

that I need further development than having my professor watch a video of me actually
teaching math. Though results were far from stellar the teacher gave praise for my
demeanor and positive fun teaching style with the students. Unfortunately, I didn’t
encompass all of the parameters of the lesson, but I learned a ton from the recording of
my teaching of 14 students at Allison Elementary in Twin Rivers School District. It was
procedural math at the fifth grade level, with some variance and assistance to students in
lower grades attending that day. I used visual models, actual manipulatives, helped ESL
and younger students learn the material. The instruction and review of my teaching
greatly helped to “Establish professional learning goals” element 3 in TPE 6.

TPE 4: Planning Instruction and Designing Learning Experiences for All Students
