Good. Now, the activity that we did earlier has

something to do with our topic for today which is
a Topic Sentence.

Are you all ready? Yes Ma’am.

D. Discussion

What is a Topic Sentence?

A topic sentence is the most important sentence

in a paragraph. Sometimes referred to as a focus
sentence, the topic sentence helps organize the
paragraph by summarizing the information in the
paragraph. In formal writing, the topic sentence
is usually the first sentence in a paragraph
(although it doesn't have to be).
The topic sentence acts as a kind of summary,
and offers the reader an insightful view of the
writer’s main ideas for the following paragraph.

What is the purpose of the Topic Sentence?

A topic sentence essentially tells readers what the
rest of the paragraph is about. All sentences after
it have to give more information about that
sentence, prove it by offering facts about it, or
describe it in more detail. For example, if the topic
sentence concerns the types of endangered
species that live in the ocean, then every
sentence after that needs to expound on that
subject.

The supporting idea contains your opinion

about the topic. It shows what direction you are
going to take in writing about the topic. It helps
the reader understand your purpose for writing
the paragraph or essay.

Here are some examples:

Topic Sentence: There are many reasons why

pollution in ABC Town is the worst in the world.
The topic is "pollution in ABC Town is the worst in
the world" and the controlling idea is "many
reasons."

Topic Sentence: To be an effective CEO requires

certain characteristics.
The topic is "To be an effective CEO" and the
controlling idea is "certain characteristics."
GORDON COLLEGE

Topic Sentence: There are many possible

contributing factors to global warming.
The topic is "global warming" and the controlling
idea is "contributing factors."

Location of the Topic Sentence

Topic sentences are usually in the first sentence

of the paragraph, but not always.
They may also be located within the paragraph
or at the end of the paragraph.

TOPIC SENTENCE IN THE FIRST SENTENCE OF THE

PARAGRAPH.

Salva and the other boys made cows

out of clay. The more cows you
made, the richer you were. But they
had to be fine, healthy animals. It
took time to make a lump of clay look
like a good cow. The boys would
challenge each other to see who
could make the most and best cows."
(Linda Sue Park, A Long Walk to
Water. Clarion, 2010).

TOPIC SENTENCE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE

PARAGRAPH.

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION ARTS AND SCIENCES

When a camera flash is used in

a low-light environment, the
subject's eyes may appear red
in the finished photograph.
What is known as "red-eye" is the
result of light from the flash
reflecting off the pupils of the
eyes. The phenomenon of red-
eye can be lessened by using
the red-eye reduction feature
found on many SLR
cameras. This feature activates
a lamp which shines a small light
directly into the subject's
eyes.When this happens, the
diameter
of the pupil is reduced, thus
tightening the opening in the iris.
Since a smaller pupil means a
smaller host for the reflection,
the chances of red-eye
occurring are greatly reduced.

TOPIC SENTENCE AT THE END OF THE PARAGRAPH.

People do it everyday. They log

on to their favorite website and
browse for hours, checking out
bargains. They dump every
possible wish into their shopping
carts, knowing they can cast
each one aside before they
finalize their purchases. On the
way, they may enter a
sweepstakes in the hopes of
winning a trip to Cabo San
Lucas, or maybe even a new
SUV. And then, when they have
decided on their purchases, they
enter private information without
giving it a thought. With a
keystroke, they release their
personal data into what may or
may not be a secure
zone. Despite what much of the
public believes, internet
shopping is not safe.

Usually, writers
use outline when writing papers in order to know
which topic to cover in what order.

I have here a sample outline that is commonly

used in organizing papers.

(The teacher shows the outline in the class)

None, Ma’am.

Do you have any questions?

If you have questions, please raise your right

hand.

If you don’t have any questions, let’s have an

activity.

E. Post Activity

I have here a short selection and I want you to

identify the topic sentence and its location. Are
the instructions clear? Definitely, Ma’am.

(The teacher presents the short selection.)

Constructing a wedding cake is a complicated (students will do the activity)

process. Before any baking takes place, the
size of the cake and the decorative design to
be used must be determined. Then the layers
are baked. On a large cake the bottom layers
may be as much as sixteen inches in diameter.
Because of their size, these layers must be
baked one at a time, a process which may
actually take an entire day. Once the layers
are cooled, same-size pairs are matched and
frosted. Since large wedding cakes are
surprisingly heavy, half-inch dowel rods must be
measured, cut, and carefully driven into the
bottom layers. These wooden posts provide
hidden support for the weighty upper layers.
When all the layers are set in place, flowers,
garlands and leaves of frosting are added.
These delicate touches individualize the

wedding cake and transform it from merely a

cake into a culinary work of art.

IV.Evaluation
Now for your last activity, I want you to find the
Topic Sentence and the Supporting details of
this selection. Use the outline that was shown by
me awhile back.

Am I making myself clear? Yes Ma’am.

Alright!

Oktoberfest is my favorite holiday. One thing

that I love about Oktoberfest is my family’s
tradition of going to Big Bear Lake for a
weekend every October. We rent a cabin
there so that we can attend the Oktoberfest
activities that go on at the Big Bear Convention
Center all month. The center has activities for
children and adults, so everyone from my little
cousins to my grandparents can find
something to enjoy. Activities include German
games, music, foods, and crafts. Another thing
that I love about Oktoberfest is the costumes
people wear. For instance, men and boys will
dress up in lederhosen, which are leather shorts
with built-in suspenders to hold them up. Girls
and women like to dress up as Bavarian beer
garden waitresses, like the woman on the St.
Pauli beer label. People who don’t have a
costume wear crazy hats: chicken hats, alpine
hats with a feather, and even beer hats. Also,
people can purchase silly necklaces to wear.
Last year, my sister bought a necklace with a
rubber chicken hanging from it. The best thing
about the festivities is the entertainment. For
example, at least one band actually comes
from Germany each year to play music at the
Convention Center, and even local bands play
“oompah” music. Dancing to this music is a lot
of fun. Of course there is the traditional polka
dancing; in addition, the chicken dance and
the Pizza Hut dance are very popular. Another
source of entertainment is the contests. For
instance, there are beer drinking, log sawing,
and stein holding contests for women and
men. All in all, the family tradition, costumes,
and entertainment make Oktoberfest a unique

holiday experience that I look forward to every

year.
