Introduction

This report outlines the applicability of Monitoring technologies for monitoring

slopes at Vale Moatize.

The aim of the report is to identify and recommend the ideal technology to:
• Provide the resolution required to effectively detect movement at
– Pit slopes
– Tailing Dams
– Waste deposits
• Achieve project specific range, vertical and lateral scan area coverage
and satisfy monitoring requirements

GroundProbe
GroundProbe is an Australian company specialized on:

• Previous detection of geotechnical hazard

• Remote analysis of geotechnical data
• Alarms for evacuation

We have a range of solutions to attend customers needs with any geotechnical concerns:

• Technology agnostic (RAR and SAR)

• Open pit and underground monitoring
• Mine slopes and civil industry
• Tailing dams and hydro electrical dams

GroundProbe´s monitoring fundamentals
All GroundProbe´s monitoring solutions have the same fundamentals:
• 24h monitoring
• Alarm system
• High frequency of data generation (every 2 min or more)
• Light data for live transmission
• Imaging and video systems
• Remote monitoring from any computer
• Support for analysis, data interpretation and alarm validation

InSAR
A geotechnical engineer must take care of a large number of structures, slopes, tailing
dams, waste deposits, in places of difficult access, often without proper or sufficient
instrumentation.
• Geotechnical monitoring from satellites: wide and precise movement detection
• Supports engineers to decide: where to focus?
• Hyistorical database: when it started?
• Typical precision: ~2 mm

InSAR application for Moatize
• Beneffits:
– Historical data for all the site since 2015
– Identifies deformation process on early stages
– Supports monitoring planning
• Back analysis: Sentinel-1 @16 m resolution data for archive analysis. Images from
November 2014 to present (ascending and descending look directions);
• On going Monitoring:
– Sentinel @16 m resolution
– TerraSAR-X @3 m resolution
• Reports delivered every month
• Reprocessing for slow deformation movements every 6 months
• Quarterly optical imagery: high resolution images with orthorectification

GNSS
GNSS are geotechnical GPS, autonomous, that monitor deformations (movement)
in real time, with millimetre precision.
• small and light (15 cm, 3.5 kg)
• works with conventional batteries that last up to 2 years
• integrated wi-fi
• provides information on a powerful geotechnical dashboard with alarms
• simplified installation

Wednesday, 13 February 2019 – Commercial in Confidence – 8

GNSS application for Moatize
• Applicable to the smaller dike at Chipenga dam
• 350 m lengh
• 6 – 10 GNSS (confirm distribution)
• Data available on line with alarms
• Anti-robbery instalation option

Wednesday, 13 February 2019 – Commercial in Confidence – 9

GMS – Geotechnical Monitoring System
The GMS is a robotic station specially developed for geotechnical monitoring, which uses
radar technique and processing to increase its accuracy. It has a special feature: it can
monitor real prisms, as well as virtual prisms in any quantity and location.
• Monitor real prisms, and virtual prisms
• Data analysis, real time alarms, imaging and video features
• More precise compared to surveying tools (radar signal algorithm)
• Economical

Wednesday, 13 February 2019 – Commercial in Confidence – 10

GMS application for Moatize
• Applicable to the bigger dike at Chipenga dam
• 1900 m length
• Highly vegetated requires real prisms (confirm quantity and distribution)
• Sensor location close to the dam requires big horizontal coverage
• Precision 0,5 mm @ 250 m
Sensor location

Radars SSR-FX
RAR radars (Real Aperture Radar) are ideal for critical safety monitoring when there is an
immediate risk to the safety of people, equipment and operation.
It allows to monitor slopes from any position, with mobility and speed to follow the
dynamics of production in the day to day of the mine, and with sub-millimeter precision.
• Agile, flexible and energy self-sustained
• 0.1 mm precision
• Quick deployment
• High resolution (@500 m: 4 x 0,68 m)
• 2 minutes scan
• Weather station integrated

Wednesday, 13 February 2019 – Commercial in Confidence – 12

Application for Moatize – Section 2A
• Fractures system favourable to toppling
• Catch bench filled with material with ramp above
• Several small failures
• Requires resolution and fast scan time

Radar point of view

Application for Moatize – Pit 4
• Fractures system favourable to toppling
• Cracks at the ramp / several small failures
• Requires resolution and fast scan time

Geotechnical Support Services
In general, local geotechnical engineers have activities such meetins, contracts
management and others; therefore they don´t have exclusive time to dedicate to data
interpretation and alarm validation.

GroundProve offers GSS – Geotechnical Support Services, with 25 engineers in shifts to

provide:
• 24h monitoring support to data analysis
• Remote report
• Alarm validation
• TARP (Trigger Action Response Plan)
• Report at any movement detection

It´s the maximun attention to your

geotechnical concerns.

Wednesday, 13 February 2019 – Commercial in Confidence – 17

Application for Moatize
• Reports trends change 24h/day
• Alarm validation
• TARP (Trigger Action Response Plan): in case of alarm, who does what and how
• Report at any movement detection
