In groups of four (4) complete the following assignment I the class

session on Monday February 3.

A. Physics of the Ear

1. (a) Explain how the ear responds to an incoming sound wave

(b) Consider sensitivity, frequency response and intensity.

(c) State the orders of magnitude of the threshold of hearing and the intensity
at which discomfort is experienced

 Download and use an audiometer to demonstrate the difference in hearing

thresholds for individuals. Focus on the change in thresholds with age.

 Play high frequency tones above 10 kHz to check whether all individuals can
hear.

2. The equation below represents the intensity level in dB

= 10 log10 (I/Io)

(a) State the:

(i) purpose of this formula

(ii) meaning of each symbol

(b) Explain why the equation is expressed in dB

3. Discuss the subjective qualities of the terms 'noise' and 'loudness';

B. Physics of the Eye

The equation below represents the lens formula.

1 1 1
= +
𝑓 𝑢 𝑣

(a) Define the term “lens”

(b) Using the formula, State the

(i) purpose of this formula

(ii) meaning of each symbol

(c) Draw an optical diagram, showing the each symbol identified in the lens formula

2. Draw the eye and discuss the different parts

3. (a) Discuss how the eye forms focused images of objects at different distances.

(b) Explain the terms:

(i) focus and depth of focus

(ii) accommodation

4. The following refer defects of the eye.

I. long sight

II. short sight

III. astigmatism

IV. cataracts

(a) Explain EACH defect mentioned:

 Calculations on power of correcting lens required.

(b) Draw a diagram to show where tight from a NEAR object is focused if there is no
accommodation by the eye.
(c) Draw another diagram to show where light from a distant object is focused if the
eye suffers from hypermetropia (long sight).

(d). Discuss how defects of the eye can be corrected;

5. Discuss the formation of focused images in the simple camera and magnifying glass.
[5 marks]

(c) A far-sighted (hyperopic) eye has a near point pf 1.50 m. A lens is used to allow the eye to
view objects placed al 25 cm from the eye.

(i) Calculate the focal length of the lens.

[3 marks]

(ii) Determine the power of the lens.

[2 marks]
