STATE OF THE ART

Compact description
After 15 year scientific research on Simmondsia Chinensis

Author: André d'Oosterlynck

Introduction:

I’ve started this work in 1987 by studying the scientific publications (ça 174 copies) related to this
subject. After checking those results and conclusions, I continued my part of the job in
unravelling some contradictory data and facts. Some brand new and intriguing results emerged
from my research.

Bioactivity of the Simmondsines (S'ns)

Simmondsins can be extracted from the jojoba press cake which is discarded untill now after
extracting the oil from the jojoba seeds. The use of this orally taken natural bioactive product
gives until now spectacular results (www.simmondsine.com). The S'ns have multiple bioactive
properties. Conclusions of the in vitro – in vivo results indicate that:

- 50% of the S'ns (dimethyl simmondsins) are food intake inhibitors without causing
the feeling of hunger. This starvation leads to apoptosis from mainly predisposed
cancer cells, cleaning and protecting the body against cancer.
- The remaining 50% (desmethyl- and didesmethylsimmondsins) are NOT food
intake inhibitors but so called angiogenesis inhibitors or neo-vascularisation
suppressors. This fraction is useful in treating neo-vascularization depending
diseases such as tumoral cancers and arthritis.
- In overall, the beneficial effects have been proved through human volunteers with
blood sample analysis "before and after" a treatment period (3 to 6 weeks max.) :

PSA (prostate specific antigen): lower

Rheumatoid factor: lower
Cholesterol (high & low density): better ratio

In general, the organ functions of the test persons aged over 45-50 years are significantly
improved. These results are performed by biometric analyses and are available. The first
conclusion is that Simmondsine acts as a rejuvenator and, most probably, as a non-aggressive,
natural anti-cancer product.

Example : even after 18 months treating a malign prostate cancer, proved by biopsy and a PSA
of 18 µg/ml, no side effects were observed. Three years after ending this treatment, the prostate
problems of this person are still under control and this person is apparently healthy with respect
to his age (76 y).

Due to the presence of angiogenese inhibiting properties, this product is contra-indicated for
non-mature persons (children) and women during their fertile period.

However, I need more exterior assistance to proceed this study

What do we need now to commercialise these findings?

In first instance, we need an agreement with the jojoba industry, producers of the famous jojoba
oil.
Although the protected “Use of Simmondsin as an Angiogenesis inhibitor” gives a new
vision on the jojoba business by moving the main point from oil production towards the
Simmondsin isolation, we have to take in account that the jojoba industry is up till now, not yet
interested to follow the new path.

- They need to invest in a solvent extraction unit in order to extract the remaining oil from
the press cake (PC). Such a unit is several times more expensive than the classical oil
press unit to simply expell the oil. The extraction unit has to be operated by high-skilled
people and has an initially low return on investment.

Discussion of the figures proving the benefit of this protected vision:

The yearly world production of jojoba seeds is estimated at about 10 000 tons.

Composition of the seed:

- 50% ' jojoba oil' (4500 ton/yearly production)

- 50% sugars, proteins, peel, ferulate anti-oxidants, Simmondsines and moisture.

Composition of the PC (Press Cake) biomass after expelling the oil:

- 25% sugars (3 hexoses, 2 pentoses)
- 20% proteins
- 20% brown peel fraction
- 11-15% remaining jojoba oil
- 10% simmondsines
- 5-10% moisture

Isolation of Simmondsines:

1) The first step is to remove the remaining oil.

Upon condition the industrial plant can process 1000 ton/year, the value of the extracted oil
gives us a break-even operation over a few years after the investment of this plant.
This investment is absolutely necessary to produce oil-free press cake which is absolutely
necessary as raw material to extract the simmondsins in an easily and economically justified
way.

2) The second step is the extraction of the Simmondsines, out of the oil-free PC. These
operations have been studied by myself, resulting in a 'lab' procedure to obtain nearly pure
Simmondsines.

Note: step 1 & 2 can be done in the same plant. Investments were estimated (by professional
people) at 3 to 4 million US $ (1994).

Estimating the economic value of Simmondsine:

At present, the value of the press cake is limited by the value of the extractable oil (11-15%)
minus the operating costs. The return on investment from the extraction plant is lower than the
one from the expelling plant. The oil-free simmondsin containing PC is worthless and generally
dumped. Nevertheless, simmondsins do have great potential and can make the oil extraction of
the PC profitable whereby the oil is merely considered as a by-product.

Example:
The purified Simmondsins in an alcoholic solution have the characteristic to stimulate certain
organ functions and have the first described non-evasive angiogenesis inhibiting properties.

One rejuvenating treatment during 6 weeks using 50 ml containing 20% Simmondsines

(10g/50ml) is estimated arbitral at 50€ (consumer price).

1 kg oil free PC contains potentially 100 g Simmondsins (or 10 times 50€ = 500€).

One dose at 15 drops daily, shows within 20-30 days already significant effects on the organism
as proven by blood analyses.

Note: the fact that I'm being granted an exclusive protection by an international PCT-patent,
namely "THE USE OF SIMMONDSINE AS AN ANGIOGENESIS INHIBITOR", makes no
difference whom is isolating the Simmondsins on this world. I have the exclusive right to give
exploitation licenses about this specific claimed use.

Costs

Considering the possibility of building an industrial plant, we need practically to split this
procedure in:

1) The building site of the extractor must be in an area were the jojoba plant grows and
jojoba oil is already produced by pressing (expelling). In the same plant we have to
extract Simmondsine as a raw material, using an alternative pathway. The estimated cost
of such an industrial plant amounts to approx. 3-4 million US $.
2) To refine the Simmondsins, we should send the Simmondsins concentrate to Europe.
This part of the job can be finished by a professionally equipped jobber specialised in
extracting biomasses. Such jobbers are readily available in Europe (Jobbers in France &
Italy have already been consulted).

CONCLUSION:

A unit capable to process 1000 ton PC on year basis was evaluated 3-4 million US $ in 1994.

1000 ton PC yields approx. 900 tons of oil-free PC (and 100 ton oil) which after extraction and
refining yields approx. 80 to 90 tons of S'ns.

Bulk production of S'ns amounts to 80 à 90 000 kg x 500€/kg x = 40 to 45 millions euro.

After substraction of the general costs to run the plant such as solvents, wages, taxes,
maintenances, insurances… we estimate the netto return at 20% of the consumer price : i.e. 8 to
9 millions euro (under condition the plant works at 100%).

This study concerning the isolation techniques and biological activities of the S'ns is practically
finished. Only the scaling up process must complete this project. I'm starting now to look for
project development and financing.

Thank you for your time and attention
