Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

For a student or students that have a visual or auditory impairment, this lesson plan will be redirected toward
their needs. A student who has a visual impairment can have headphones to listen to the auditory of the
video. This student can participate in the group setting of choosing what is the better food choice by having
students call out the foods/drinks that are out there. The other members in the group can assist this student
by guiding them around and telling them what is at the table or the selection of foods that are present. A
student who has an auditory impairment can have a written transcript for the auditory clip or use an app
called “Hear you now”, depending on the severity of the auditory impairment. This gives students a chance to
participate in the group work and be able to know the instructions being told by the teacher. It also will
amplify the sounds, which can help someone who is not completely deaf but may have a auditory difficulty.

Lesson idea implementation:
The teacher will start by having written out food choices around the classroom that students will have a
chance to pick. There will be different foods from each food group and drinks selections around the room.
Teacher will allow students to choose foods that they usually eat or what their food choices may look like on a
regular basis. The teacher will show the BrainPOP video starting at 1:32 to get them to see the better choices
of foods that they can be choosing when eating. After the video, the student will group students into groups
of 4 and will label out foods that students can choose from, and this time students have to collectively come
up with the healthier food choice. Each student will be assigned a specific food group for example one of the
four will be in charge of the vegetables, then another for the fruits, etc. However, all 4 members must agree
with one another before moving on to the next item.

This will take anywhere from 45 to 60 minutes to complete this lesson. Students are going to be assessed
base upon what food choices they gathered as a group collectively. This is assessing their ability to use
decision-making skills that enhance their health. By the end of this lesson, students will be informed how to
properly choose the healthier option, which is a part of the decision-making process. Throughout the lesson,
the teacher will walk around monitoring the students’ engagement with one another. The teacher will give
students feedback after they have presented their final product to the class. When the group is done, they
will explain to the class what they chose and why they chose the foods that they did. This will give students a
chance to explain the choices that they made.
Reflective Practice:
I think that the activities will get students actively engaged and they are getting the ability to apply those
decision-making skills. By allowing students to make their own decisions, then they can apply those skills
outside of the classroom into their daily life. I believe that another technology tools that I could have used
was an app. I believe that I could have furthered this lesson by using an app like MyPlate, which is like a food
journal/diary that students can keep up with. Then they can set goals with how they are trying to improve in
certain food groups, and with their decision-making in their everyday life.
