Activity 2

Single out a commercial on television meant to sell hair products for women.

1. Name all the elements you see and hear.

This commercial is an informative advertisement. It aims to attracts the customer and create awareness
to their product. The elements are the hair, shampoo and the actress. They clearly show their message to the
costumers and their product was clearly introduced. Because of their storyline they delivered their message
clearly. They add little effects that shows their hair are smells good and still shiny even they are soaked with
smoke and they are under the sun.

2. Where is the setting?

The setting at first was in the flower field showing like their product is fresh and good like the flowers.
Then they are riding in scooter and pass by on the market where many vendors and smokes. Then in the photo
shoot studio.

3. Since this was shot using the camera try to discern the language of the camera by listing the angles (long
shot, medium close up, close-up) and the corresponding scene that it tries to capture.

The angle shot used:


At first they used establishing shot, showing the whole field of flowers
Medium close up shot, when they are talking or having conversation.
Close up shot, when the make up artist of Kath and Sarah amazed on their hair.

4. What is the beginning, middle and end?

At first Sarah and Kath are in the middle of flower field and they are smelling their hair and flowers.

Then, they rode on scooter and pass by in the market where full of street food vendors. And last they came into
the studio having interview and photo shoot.

5. A commercial is always selling a product. How is this commercial selling its product? What is its most
potent way to sell the product?

They sell the product by giving the viewers information about their product. They show that their
product is fresh and smells good even youre soaked in smoke dirts and hot sunshine. The potent way in selling a
product is by advertising (tv commercial).

6. Are there memorable lines or visual effects? What makes it memorable?

“Smooth and fragrant hair all day” it is their tag line. They have effects, the flower effects that
symbolize that their hair is fragrant and nice.
Activity 4
To illustrate genre, let us take a look at the program schedule at least 3 leading broadcast networks over free
television.

1. Take look at program schedule of major television networks.

2. Analyze what genres are shown at particular time of the day.

3. Build a hypothesis: why do you think network executives choose to air a program of this genre at this
particular time of day?

In GMA network they are airing at early morning (4:55 am) the morning newscast program Unang Hirit. This
belongs to news genre however this show has different parts after news casting they are like advertising. They
are giving ideas, places, restaurants, products or even food to the viewers. They can be also part of
entertainment genre because they have the part in the program showing singers or dancers.They are airing this
program early morning so that the viewers can have some updates or information for the day. For example,
knowing the weather forecast for the day or updates to our community. They can also be entertained and having
other information where place nice to go or eat.

Eat Bulaga noontime show in GMA network is part of entertainment genre. But somehow they are like
advertising other products. This program was airing at exactly 12 noon, I think it airs at this particular time
because it is a free time for almost, it’s a lunch break or any other break for others so they choose this time so
that they can watch this at their free time and be entertain while they are resting.

24 Oras is a Philippine television newscast show broadcast by GMA Network. It belongs to news genre
because they are forecasting news updates and information about our country and other things. It aired at 6:30
PM. It airs at this particular time because almost like this time is the rest time of many people. It aired at night
so that the viewers may be updated to what happened this day.
