Activity Title: QUADRILATERALS

Learning Target: M9GE-IIIa-1: identifies quadrilaterals that are parallelograms.
Reference Title: Unfurling Mathematics: A Work text in High School Math pg.100-
103

CONCEPT NOTE
 Quadrilateral just means "four sides" (quad means four, lateral means side).
 Quadrilateral has four-sides, it is 2-dimensional (a flat shape), closed (the lines
join up), and has straight sides.

PROPERTIES OF QUADRILATERALS
A quadrilateral has:
 four sides (edges)
 four vertices (corners)
 interior angles that add to 360 degrees

TYPES OF QUADRILATERALS
The Parallelogram
 A parallelogram has opposite sides parallel and equal in length. Also opposite
angles are equal.
The Rectangle
 A rectangle is a four-sided shape where every angle is a right angle (90°).
Also opposite sides are parallel and of equal length.
The Square
 A square has equal sides and every angle is a right angle (90°)
 Also opposite sides are parallel.
 A square also fits the definition of a rectangle (all angles are 90°)
The Rhombus
 A rhombus is a four-sided shape where all sides have equal length.
 Also opposite sides are parallel and opposite angles are equal.
 Another interesting thing is that the diagonals meet in the middle at a right
angle. In other words they "bisect" (cut in half) each other at right angles.

The Trapezoid
 A trapezoid (called a trapezium in the UK) has a pair of opposite sides parallel.
 An Isosceles trapezoid, as shown above, has left and right sides of equal length
that join to the base at equal angles.
The Kite
 It has two pairs of sides:
 Each pair is made of two equal-length sides that join up.
 Also the angles where the two pairs meet are equal.

ASSESSMENT
Identify whether the following quadrilaterals are parallelograms or not. Put a check
mark (/) under the appropriate column.

Activity Title: PROPORTION

Learning Target: M9GE-IIIf-1: describes a proportion
Reference Title: Unfurling Mathematics: A Work text in High School Math pg.172-
175

CONCEPT NOTE
Proportion is a mathematical comparison between two numbers. Often, these numbers
can represent a comparison between things or people. When p,q,r and s are numbers,
𝑝 𝑟 𝑝 𝑟
𝑞 ≠ 0 and 𝑠 ≠ 0, and is equal to proportion of , then the propotion is =
𝑞 𝑠 𝑞 𝑠.
 The Fundamental Law of Proportion (“Means – Extreme Property”) states that
the product of the means is equal to the product of the extremes
 Geometrical Proportion is the relationship between two things when the
quantities of the two are equal in ratios.

EXAMPLE
Solve the following proportions.
1. 3: 5 = 𝑏: 45 2. 𝑛: 50 − 𝑛 = 3: 7
Solution: Solution:
Using the property of proportion, Using the property of proportion,
3: 5 = 𝑏: 45 𝑛: 50 − 𝑛 = 3: 7
3(45) = 5b 7n = 3(50-n)
135 = 5b 7n = 150-3n
27 = b 7n+3n = 150
10n = 150
n = 15
ASSESSMENT
A. Express each in lowest term.
1. 8 to 12
2. 51 to 85
B. Solve for x.
3. 2:x = 5:20
4. 8:3 = 4:x

CONCEPT NOTE
- Two figures are said to be similar if they are the same in shape.
- The Tilda symbol (~) means ‘similar’
PROPERTIES OF SIMILAR FIGURES
- Corresponding angles are congruent
- Corresponding side have equal ratios (this ratio is called scale factor).

EXAMPLE
∆ABC and ∆DEF are similar.
A. Identify the corresponding sides.
B. Form a ratio of their corresponding sides
(scale factor)
• The order of the letters also tells which angles
are congruent to each other.

ASSESSMENT

scale factor.

CONCEPT NOTES
SIMILAR TRIANGLES
Two triangles are said to be similar if their corresponding angles are congruent and
the corresponding sides are in proportion.
CONDITIONS FOR SIMILARITY OF TRIANGLES
 Side-Side-Side Similarity Theorem ( SSS~)-If the corresponding sides of
two triangles are proportional, then the triangles are similar.
 Side-Angle-Side Similarity Theorem ( SAS~)-If an angle of one triangle is
congruent to an angle of a second triangle and the sides including the two
triangles are proportional, then the triangles are similar.
 Angle-Angle Similarity Postulate ( AA~)-If two angles of one triangle are
congruent to two angle of another triangle, then the triangles are similar.
