Section B. Short Structured Question [10 marks]
7. A Visking tubing containing red ink solution is tied and placed into a beaker of
concentrated sucrose solution. The set-up is left to stand for an hour.
(a) What would you observe at the end of the experiment?

The Visking tubing will contain a mixture of red ink and water solution .
[1]

(b) State the molecules that have moved across the Visking tubing.

Water molecules that have moved across the Visking tubing. [1]

(c) Explain what you have observed in part (a) above.

The water molecules are small enough to pass through the small holes of the Visking
tube known as the pores . Water molecules diffuses from the beaker (higher
concentration of water molecules ) into the Visking tubing (lower concentration of water
molecules) by osmosis . Thus the water molecules and red ink molecules are found in
the visking tubing .

2. An animal cell was placed in a mixture containing a high concentration of glucose,

protein and starch in water.
(a) Name the substance(s) that can enter the cell by diffusion.

Glucose can enter the cell by diffusion . [1]

(b) State the function of the cell membrane.

The cell membrane controls the movement of the substances moving in and out of the
cell .
_____________________________________________________________________[2]

(c) Explain your answer to part (a) above.

__Glucose molecules are small enough to diffuse through the cell membrane into the
cell unlike the starch and protein molecule which are too large to diffuse through the cell
membrane .
