WHAT IS PRESS TOOL ?

Press tools are commonly used in

hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical
presses to produce the sheet metal
components in large volumes.
Generally press tools are categorized by
the types of operation performed using
the tool, such as blanking, piercing,
bending, forming, forging, trimming
etc.
ELEMENTS OF PRESS TOOL
 Punch and die
 Punch holder
 Thrust plate (Back plate)
 Shank
 Top plate
 Stripper cum guide plate
 Stripper
 Bottom Plate
 Stopper
 Screws and dowels
TYPES OF PRESS TOOL

■ SIMPLE TOOL
■ COMPOUND TOOL
■ COMBINATION TOOL
■ BENDING TOOL
■ DRAWING TOOL
■ PROGRESSIVE TOOL
ADVANTAGES

■ SPEED, SPEED, SPEED!

■ Less Scrap Material
■ Quicker Setup
■ Create More Geometries with a Single Process
■ High Repeatability
■ Lower Cost per Part
DISADVANTAGES

■ Only limited to sheet metal components.

■ Tool cost is high.
■ Floor space requirement is more.
DESIGNING OF PROGRESSIVE PRESS
TOOL
Step 1: Read the drawing carefully to identify the customer
requirement.
Step 2: Identify the operation: Piercing And Blanking Operation.
Step 3: Required tool: Simple Progressive Tool.
Step 4: Strip Layout And Economy Factor
Step 5: Conceptual Drawing
Step 6: Cutting Clearance and Sizes for Punch and Die
Step 7 Calculating Cutting/ Shearing Force
Step 8: Press Tonnage (in Tonnes)
Step 9: Fastener Selection
Step 10: Die Plate Thickness (in mm)
Step 11. Other Plate Thickness
Step 12. Working Area
Step 13. Selection Of Standard Die Set
Step 14. Height Of Punch
Step 15. Centre Of Pressure
Step 16. Sizes Of Pilot
Step 17. Determine Tool Shut Height Suitable to the Machine Shut
Height
Step 18. Recalculate Tool Shut Height According To Machine Shut
Height.
Step 19. Press Tool Data
Step 20. Bill of Material
FUTURE SCOPE

■ The future includes automation of processes into

manufacturing and engineering sectors.
■ Reduced manual intervention in process control using
machine tool control system.
■ Smart tooling would be the key to optimise cost, reduce
scrap & improved machine utilisation.
