1. Scope
1.1 The purpose of this standard is to establish a uniform means of designating instruments and
instrument systems for measurement and control by the use of symbols and material codes for
DuPont work.
1.2 The system used by some vendors and contractors differs from this standard and is described
in the Instrument Society of America S5.1, “Instrument Symbols and Identification.”
1.3 More detailed diagrams may be required for unusual or complex loops. See PR8 and the
Engineering Design Manual [Type 79] for the preparation of Loop Diagrams.
1.4 See Section 3 for symbols and diagrams for field bus technology.
2. General
2.1 An instrument symbol is a graphic representation of the instrument to be used.
2.2 See the Engineering Design Manual [Type 74] for symbols to be used on Instrument
Arrangement Drawings.
2.3 The instrument symbol is always identified by an instrument item number as described in
R121J, “Instrument Identification System.”
2.4 The instrument symbols shown in this standard shall be used on instrument diagrams. Special
or functional symbols may be used but they must be explained by legend drawing or noted on the
drawing where the special symbol is used.
2.5 R110J is available on the following Intergraph Drawings: W1043572, W1043573, W1043574,
W1043575 and W1173948 history sheet.
These drawings can be level copied for project use.
2.6 History sheet for older symbols that are not in current use and not recommended for new
drawings see W1173948.
