We are entering that time of the year when
we give and get feedback on our yearly performance.
It is always a stressful time of year, as both giving and
receiving feedback is very personal and very sensitive.
There are many things we can do to lessen
the stress, and first among all of them is to
give feedback often, as and when needed. One of
the most damaging things we do, whether we are
managers or colleagues, is to not let someone know how
we feel about their work and behaviour. Whether we work with them or we
supervise them, we owe it to our colleagues to let them know that their work is
good, or let them know how they need to improve.
This is not just about making sure the organisation achieves its goals. As people
who work together, we form a community, and we need to ensure that the
community is strong. That means we need to be able to help our colleagues do
their best work, and when they do their best work, we need to appreciate them
for it. Simultaneously, we need to know that there are things we could be doing
better, and we have to allow our colleagues help us become better. It is a two-way
street.
Receiving feedback at the end of the year can be sometimes heartbreaking.
Good performance management means we need to ensure that our feedback is
never a surprise, that nothing we say to them is something we are saying for the
first time. Our colleagues need to understand what is expected of them, and how
they are contributing to their team and the organisation as a whole.
Receiving feedback is tough. We often feel judged as a person, and it hurts our
egos. It affects our sense of who we are and what we have accomplished. This is
exactly why we need to ask for feedback frequently and immediately after we do
something, to ensure that the feedback we receive is about the tasks we
undertake. We become better at accepting it, and we get better at our jobs.
I hope we as an organisation move into a place of trusting our colleagues to
provide good, constructive feedback, and trusting our colleagues to receive that
feedback in a mindset that is open and not fearful.

New Launch in Specialty
Segment
MCT stands for “medium chain triglycerides”, which is
mostly derived from coconut oil and also made from palm oil.
It is a perfect fat to add as ingredient in food, smoothies, and
coffee for extra energy and brain-boosting benefits. Medium-
chain fats are digested easily and sent directly to our liver,
where they have a thermogenic effect and the ability to
positively alter our metabolism. This is one reason why many
people claim that MCTs, including coconut oil, are burned by
the body for energy, or “fuel”.
Our R&D and Production team has developed an in- house
process for making of MCT oil. The first R&D sample is
submitted to Market team for market seeding.

Waste to Wealth
“It is, in fact, a humongous problem. India’s 377 million
urban population is generating 62 million tonnes of waste
every year, and if the growing urban population coupled with
the nation’s burgeoning economy, purchasing power and
consumption patterns are factored in, the total urban waste
in India is likely to rise to 165 million tonnes by 2031,
according to a government task force report on waste to
energy published in 2014”.

Anything to do with waste-to-energy or waste-to-wealth
is incidental. Waste to wealth has to be paid for, it can’t pay
for itself.
This is one of the areas of UPLs focus. We are constantly
working on reducing the generation of waste, at the same
time utilizing the waste in an environmentally friendly way.
One such initiative is “Wealth out of waste” in pigment
production area. The foreign material termed as scum is
generated while producing the pigment. This is segregated
after wet milling process. It contains 15% of sulphur and fine
particles of pigment. We were mixing this in our laundry
products. Now, we started filtering this through vacuum cart
and blue is also extracted. Thus we ensure, the scum doesn’t
carry sulphur and blue. The final scum is rich in silica, which is
used in making laundry grade products. Instead of just
throwing this material and accumulating waste, we are
handling this in an efficient and effective way.

Water reduction in pigment production
As you all know we are “Responsible care” company and
we need to focus on environmental aspects to eliminate or
minimise impacts to the environment.
Towards this focus, our team engaged in searching
various options / ideas to overcome the issues in handling
waste water at various stages of operation.
While scouting for ideas, we have arrived common
conclusion and identified new technique to collect, treat
and reuse the waste water from washing stage instead of
loading “Reverse osmosis” plant.
By this way, we have installed “Plate & Tube Reverse
Osmosis (PTRO)” to treat inprocess waste water efficiently
and effectively about 4500 KL water treated in a year. Due
to this, we have reduced about 4000 KL feed to “Multiple
Effect Evaporator (MEE)”, thereby we have reduced the
consumption of natural resources considerably.
Due to massive reduction in power and steam to MEE,
we have saved about 55 Lakhs so far and Rs.63000/- by
reducing fresh water intake. Pay-back-period (PBP) for this
project is less than a year.
We always welcome such wonderful ideas to optimise
our operation not only focussing on cost reduction but also
conserving natural resources.

Metal Detector
Metal detector was commissioned on 27/2/2019 at
Ambattur unit.
The sole purpose of metal detector is to deduct the
presence of foreign particles in the packaging of finished
product. This detector is exclusively used for exports
packaging and is functioning successfully till date. After
every product is packed, it goes through the process of
scanning by metal detector. Only after the successful
scanning, the product is dispatched further.
Retirement Farewell
Mr M.S Suresh, HOD Electrical Department, who served
Ultramarine for 29 glorious years.
A man of simplicity. Having total experience in the field of
electrical. He is well known for his calm and humble nature
all through these 29 years. He handles his team members
very efficiently by teaching them the importance of safety
and careful handling of electrical equipment’s. There were
no electrical accidents all these years in his entire tenure.
He was also appreciated by our chairman for his enormous
efforts in maintaining the 50 years old equipment’s in our
plant without any breakdown or noise. He was always
focused on cost saving on all the investments and decisions
he made thereby bringing productivity and profitability to
the company.
Wishing you a wonderful retirement. Enjoy this new

The CEO of Pepsi Co belongs to an average middle class
Indian family. She moved to New York for higher studies but
sadly had little money to get through. Working as a receptionist,
she could pay her tuition and afford a suit to wear to her job

several consultancies in top positions before finally walking

Your Spending Habits
1. Make a scheduled date each week to check on
your finances and make a budget for your

2. Cut out those extra expenses. Paint your own
toenails instead of getting pedicures, brew
coffee at home rather than buying coffee out,
and reduce the amount that you dine out. That
alone can probably save you few thousand of
rupees per month or more.
Paying Down Your Debts
1. Make a practice of paying all debts as soon as
possible. This habit can save you hundreds or
even thousands of rupees in interest over
time.
2. Map out your debt-payoff goals with amounts
and a timeline. Keep track of your progress,
and visualize how good it will feel to make that
final debt payment.
3. If you own a home, see if you can lower your
monthly payments by refinancing your
mortgage. If you're paying private mortgage

1. Groceries can be bought in bulk at wholesale
stores like Big Bazaar, Reliance etc., and do a
meal plan once a week so that you can buy
only what you need. Cook more meals at

at a retail store, and check for coupon codes.
3. Learn to wait for one full day before buying to
see if you really need the item in question.
Recurring Costs
1. Minimize your cable/satellite TV and internet
packages. Do you really need 500 channels?
Switch to Amazon Prime Video or Netflix.
2. Reduce your cell phone minutes to the lowest
amount you need, then set an automatic
calendar reminder to check your minute usage
four days before the bill is due. Then you can
change your plan and avoid overage charges.
3. Plant shade trees around your house to help
you save on the cost of air conditioning.
4. Plug appliances into a power strip. Flip the
strip's switch off whenever you're not using
one of those appliances. You'll save on the cost
of 'phantom energy,' which is the slow drain of
energy that stems from keeping things
plugged in.
Money-Saving Tips for the Future
1. Let the children earn money for chores,
earning 50 rupees for this, or 100 rupees for
that. Help them delay gratification and save
their chore money for the toy or video game
that they want.
2. Sell or trade your gas-guzzler for a more fuel-
efficient vehicle. If you live in an area with
good public transit, commute on the subway
or the bus, or consider becoming a one-car
family.
3. Service and maintain your car. Although it may
feel like an extra expense, you'll save in the
long run by avoiding expensive repairs.
