EX NO: CHARACTERISTICS OF OVER VOLTAGE RELAY

DATE:

Aim
To understand the operation and working of overvoltage relay for different time multiplier
setting values.

Apparatus required
Overvoltage relay (VDG11 )

Specification
Make English electric
Voltage rating 110V, 240/250, 440V AC,
Frequency 50 Hz
Setting range 110- 170%
Burdens 5.0VA @voltage setting

THEORY:
Over voltage relay
Over voltages causes weakening of insulation and breakdown of insulation in any electrical
equipment. Hence the electrical equipment shall be protected against over voltages.
The over voltage relay compares the applied voltage with the permissible set value and if the
applied voltage exceeds the set value the relay operates.
VDG11 (Electromechanical relay)
This type of relay (VDG11) is used for inverse time over voltage protection of A.C.
circuits, static capacitors and machines such as generators and synchronous motors.
Precautions to be taken
 Proper fusing for incoming supply to be provided.
 The voltage must be maintained at minimum position.
 Check the supply voltage.
 Test kit must be grounded.
 Use personal protective devices such as shoes, gloves before starting the experiments.
Procedure
The following steps need to be taken to perform this experiment.
 Connect test kit with the relay.
 Switch on the power supply and slowly increase the voltage.
 When relay operates, note the time of operation.
 Reset the alarm annunciation and repeat the procedure to take multiple readings.
