Most engines over time wear out due to heat and normal wear and tear. Some deteriorate
quicker from being driven too hard, not enough lubrication (engine oil low or none at all).
Also lack of basic maintenance can wear an engine quicker.

An Engine overhaul would include several things. Most overhauls include new pistons, new
piston rings. New Main Bearings, all new valves and springs. The cylinder and cylinder
head would probably be re-bored to ensure no leaks or compression loss. All new gaskets
for cylinder head(s), intake manifold, exhaust gaskets.

This the complete dismantling of the engine, to bring all clearances back to factory
specifications. May include replacing pistons and rings, crank, piston rod and camshaft
bearings. May include machining of the crankshaft. Refacing of valves, checking clearance
on valve stems, and will include replacement of all gaskets and seals.

An overhauled engine may be better than a factory engine.

If you require an engine overhaul, it maybe more economical to have a “remanufactured “

engine installed.

For 10 years, 1969–1979 I re-manufactured 10 VW air-cooled engines per day in a
production setup that let me tear down each engine, clean it in a vapor de-greaser and
bead blast anything needing it. I line bored the block for OS main bearings as necessary,
checked the crankcase half joinet for center joint leakage, being none indicating no need
to deck the joint, which would have necessitated line reaming the camshaft bearings and
possibly boring the main bearing seal seat. the cylinder heads , cleaned were fly cut, valve
guides replaced, valve seats re-cut, inlet valves ground and exhaust ...

What is an engine overhaul?

Just to add to the answers so far that mention that “overhaul” isn’t such a common term
anymore.

‘Way back when the useful life of a car was usually seen as being limited to 100,000 miles,
that delineation was kind of odd when you think about the amount of metal that was put
into a car’s body and chassis back then, but the really important components all tended to
wear out about that time. At the heart of the car’s engine was the interface between the
pistons and the piston walls, the rings. That’s why the single most telling diagnostic that
could be done on pre-el...

Engine internal components move in realation to each during engine operation. This
creates friction, though lubrication has been introduced, it doesn't altogether stop friction,
it only reduces it to acceptable levels. This means with time the internal parts are going to
wear beyond their tolerance limits. If the internal components wear get beyond the
tolerance limits the operation of the engine is heavily compromised. The engine starts
exhibiting negative symptoms like, loss of power, high oil consumption, overheating,
excessive smoking, etc. Such symptoms render the operation of the engi...

A rebuild. Crankshaft rod/main journals are polished, rods are resized if necessary. cam is
checked polished or replaced (followers if ohv) Bore is checked, resized if necessary,
honed if not. Deck is checked, flattened if required. Head is cleaned, valves are reseated,
springs checked and replaced, lifters are replaced. Other odds and ends if overhead valve.

Engine is reassembled with new bearings, rings, gaskets, timing belt or chain, oil pump,
often water pump.

Properly done, this zeroes the engine. You should get another lifetime out of it.
This is the time to make upgrades if that interes...

To “Overhaul” correctly means to tear-down, clean, inspect and bring all parts back into
manufactures specifications. This means cylinder bores, pistons, valves & guides,
crankshaft journals & bearings, camshaft journals & bearings as well as cam
chain/belt/gears and lifters/followers. Oil & water pumps, ignition system and
injection/carburation of fuel.
