The Crying Stone


Long time ago, lived a girl with her mother at a mountain near
a town in Kalimantan. The girl's named was Darmi. Darmi is very
beautiful. Everyday, She wears makeup and her best clothes. She
always wanted to rich and beautiful. She never helped her
mother. She is very lazy and spoiled girl.

One day, Her mother Darmi to accompany her to the market.


"Oke.. but, I don't want to walk beside you, you have to walk
behind me. With a sad heart, her mother agreed. So, Darmi walked in front
of her mother. Her mother followed behind her.

The girl and her mother looked very diffrent. The girl looked
very beautiful in her pretty dress, while her mother looked very
old in her simple dress.

On the way to the market, People greeted the beautiful girl and
asked who the old woman behind her was. Then, The girl replied
to them, that she was her servant.

Her mother was very sad. But, She couldn't anything. She
offended for the insult. Then, She said to Darmi: "Darmi.. How could
you keep telling those people that I'm not your mother?".

And Darmi said : "Mom... I have to do that, because I don't


want the to laugh at me, If they find out that you are my
mother. We look so diffrent".

"Enough Darmi! You've hurt me! So deep that I can't stand on it


any longer. Whoever and whatever I'm? You must honor me as your own mother." Said her
mother.

Her mother couldn't bear the pain anymore. She prayed to god to
punish her daugther's. "My dear lord, I can't stand on my
daugther's behavior. She's been to far in hurting me. Please,
give her a punishment to make feel sorry for what she has done
to me".

And god answered her prayed. Slowly, Darmi's legs turned into
stone and process continued to upper part of the girl's body.
The girl began to be panic. She felt sorry and cried for help
her mother's help. "Mom.. Please, Forgive me". Said the girl.
But, it was too late.

Finally. her whole body turned into stone. Until now, people
can still see the tears falling down the stone. That's why stone
is called "Crying Stone".

The Golden Slug (Keong Mas)

In the ancient time, lived a young man named Galoran. He was respected because of
his wealth and honor. His parents were nobleman so he could live with luxury. However,
he was very wasteful and every day just squandered the wealth of his parents.
One day, his parents died, but he did not care and continued to spend money as well
as before. Because his life was so extravagant, all the treasure that he had was running
out and he became an unemployed person. Many people sympathized with him and
offered a job. But every time he got the job, he just dallied and it made him always be
fired. Several months later, there was a wealthy widow who interested him. He married
the widow and of course, he was very happy to be living in luxury again.

The widow had a daughter who was very diligent and clever to weave. Her name is
Jambean, a beautiful girl and had been famous because of her weaving. However,
Galoran did not like the girl, because the girl often scolded him because of his laziness.
Finally, he threatened to torture and kill Jambean. He revealed the plan to his wife
and the wife was very sad to hear of the threat.

Hearing the news, Jambean was very sad but she volunteered herself to be killed by
her father. She told that she wanted to be dumped into a dam and did not burry under
the ground after the death. The mother agreed and did all of her wants. In the dam,
her body and head suddenly turned into the golden slugs.

Several years later, there are two widows who were looking for firewood. They were
kindred, the first widow named Mbok Sambega Rondo and the second called Mbok Rondo
Sembagil. When looking for the firewood in the jungle, they were very surprised
because of finding the beautiful golden slugs. They brought it and maintained at home.
Once they brought the snails, there was always a miracle every day. Their kitchen was
always filled with the delicious food when they came home from work. They were very
surprised, and wanted to know the person who made those foods. They pretended to
go to work and hid in the back of the house. A few moments later, there was a beautiful
girl came from the inside of the conch and she began to cook the delicious meals.
Both widows then secretly held and did not let the girl to get into the snail anymore.
The girl apparently was Jambean who had been killed by her father. Both widows then
allowed her to stay with them. Because of their versatility in weaving, she got her
famous back and made a handsome prince attracted. In the end, she married the prince
and lived happily.

MOUSE DEER AND CROCODILE

One day, Mouse Deer went down to the river to take a drink. But he knew
that the crocodile might be waiting underwater to eat him, so he said out
loud. “I wonder if the water’s warm. I’ll put in my leg and find out.” Of course
Mouse Deer didn’t put in his leg. He picked up a stick instead and put one
end into the water. Chomp…! Crocodile grabbed the stick and pulled it
underwater. Mouse Deer laughed. “Ha… ha…ha… Stupid crocodile! Cant
you tell the difference between a stick and a leg?” Then Mouse Deer ran off
to drink somewhere else.
In the next day, Mouse Deer wanted to cross the river. He wanted to eat
the fruits on the other side of the river. He saw a floating log in the river. He
knew that Crocodile looked like a log when he floated. Mouse Deer didn’t
want to be eaten by Crocodile when he crosses the river. He had an idea.
He called out loud, “Crocodile!” Crocodile rose from the water, “Hello,
Mouse Deer. Have you come to be my lunch?” Mouse Deer smiled. “Sorry,
not today, Crocodile. I have orders from the King. He wants to invite all the
crocodiles in this river to a party. He wants me to count all the crocodiles so
he could prepare enough meal for you.”
“Really…? Tell us what to do,” said Crocodile. “You must line up from this
side of the river to the other side,” said Mouse Deer. Crocodile then got all
his friends and family. They lined up across the river. Mouse Deer then
jumped onto Crocodile’s back. “One,” he counted. He jumped onto the next
crocodile, “Two.” And the next crocodile, “Three.” Mouse Deer kept jumping
until he arrived on the other side of the river. “How many are there?” asked
Crocodile. “Just enough,” said Mouse Deer. He laughed as he ran to the
forest.***

Timun Mas
Long time ago in the island of Java, Indonesia, lived a couple of farmer. They had married for
some years but they had no children. So they prayed to a monster called Buta Ijo to give them
children. Buta Ijo was a ferocious and powerful monster. He granted their wish on one
condition. When their children had grown up, they had to sacrifice them to Buta Ijo. He liked
eating fresh meat of human being. The farmers agreed to his condition. Several months later the
wife was pregnant.
She gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. They named her Timun Emas. The farmers were
happy. Timun Emas was very healthy and a very smart girl. She was also very diligent. When
she was a teenager Buta Ijo came to their house. Timun Emas was frightened so she ran away to
hide. The farmers then told Buta Ijo that Timun Emas was still a child. They asked him to
postpone. Buta Ijo agreed. He promised to come again. The following year Buta Ijo came
again. But again and again their parents said that Timun Emas was still a child.
When the third time Buta Ijo came their parents had prepared something for him. They gave
Timun Emas several bamboo needles, seeds of cucumber, dressing and salt.
‘Timun, take these things’
‘What are these things?’
‘These are your weapons. Buta Ijo will chase you. He will eat you alive. So run as fast as you
can. And if he will catch you spread this to the ground. Now go!’
Timun Emas was scared so she ran as quickly as she could. When Buta Ijo arrived she was far
from home. He was very angry when he realized that his prey had left. So he ran to chase
her. He had a sharp nose so he knew what direction his prey ran.
Timun Emas was just a girl while Buta Ijo was a monster so he could easily catch her up. When
he was just several steps behind Timun Emas quickly spread the seeds of cucumber. In seconds
they turned into many vines of cucumber. The exhausted Buta Ijo was very thirsty so he grabbed
and ate them. When Buta Ijo was busy eating cucumber Timun Emas could run away.
But soon Buta Ijo realized and started running again. When he was just several steps behind
Timun Emas threw her bamboo needles. Soon they turned into dense bamboo trees. Buta Ijo
found it hard to pass. It took him some time to break the dense bamboo forest. Meanwhile
Timun Emas could run farther.
Buta Ijo chased her again. When he almost catch her again and again Timun Emas threw her
dressing. This time it turned into a lake. Buta Ijo was busy to save himself so Timun Emas ran
way. But Buta Ijo could overcome it and continued chasing her.
Finally when Timun Emas was almost caught she threw her salt. Soon the land where Buta Ijo
stood turned into ocean. Buta Ijo was drowned and died instantly.
Timun Emas was thankful to god and came back to her home.

RORO JONGGRANG

Long time ago, there was a kingdom named Prambanan. All the people of Prambanan lived
peacefully. But then, Prambanan kingdom was attacked and occupied by the Pengging kingdom.
Prambanan then was ruled by Bandung Bondowoso of Pengging kingdom. He was a mean king.
He also had great supernatural power. His soldiers were not only humans, but also genies.
The king of Prambanan had a beautiful daughter named Loro Jonggrang. Bandung Bondowoso
fell in love with her and wanted to marry her. “You’re very beautiful. Would you be my queen?”
asked Bandung Bondowoso. Loro Jonggrang was shocked. She didn’t like Bandung Bondowoso
because he was a mean person. She wanted to refuse, but she afraid that Bandung Bondowoso
would be angry and endangered the people of Prambanan. Then, she came up with a plan. “If
you want to marry me, you have to build a thousand temples for me in just one night,” said Loro
Jonggrang. “What? That’s impossible!” said Bandung Bondowoso. But he did not give up. He
consulted with his advisor. “Your Majesty can asked the genies to help built the temples,” said
the advisor.
So, Bandung Bondowoso summoned his entire genies soldier and commanded them to help him
built a thousand temples. The genies worked in unbelievable speed. Meanwhile, Loro Jonggrang
heard from her servant that the building of a thousand temples was almost finished. She was so
worried. But again, she came up with a great idea. She asked all of her servants to help her.
“Please prepare a lot of straw and mortar. Please hurry up!” said Loro Jonggrang. “Burn the
straw and make some noise pounding the mortar, quickly.” All those servants did what Loro
Jonggrang ordered them; burning straw and pounding the mortar, making the genies think that
the sun is going to rise.
“It’s already dawn. We have to go,” said the leader of the genies to Bandung Bondowoso. All the
genies immediately stopped their work and ran for cover from the sun, which they afraid of.
They didn’t know that the light was from the fire that burning the straw, not from the sun.
Bandung Bondowoso can’t stop the genies from leaving. He was angry. He knew Loro
Jonggrang had just tricked him. “You cannot fool me, Loro Jonggrang. I already have 999
temples. I just need one more temple. Now, I will make you the one-thousandth temple.” He
pointed his finger to Loro Jonggrang and said some mantras. Magically, Loro Jonggrang’s body
turned into stone. Until now, the temple is still standing in Prambanan area, Central Java. And
the temple is called Loro Jonggrang temple.
