THE BULLETIN – OCTOBER 27th. 2010

Spring is really here – another lovely warm evening – most members were in shirt sleeves. We have been
spoiled this last week and it was probably the best Labour weekend for some years.
President Barry welcomed our guests, Paul Adams and Terry Hughes.
Bill Matson, our Host gave a Grace, simple and to the point.
A highlight of the weekend was the public Interest in the Rotary ‘Shelter Box display that was set up at Mitre
10. Steve and his helpers recorded donations of $3392 – a wonderful effort and thanks to all those who turned
out to help. Not only was there a great deal of interest, but we may get a new member from it also.
More good news also – our funds invested in South Canterbury Finance were returned intact last week – thank
you Mr Key.
The Quiz Night is on November 17 th. There will be a cut off, we have a number of entries, but teams are still
being formed, get yours organised and registered!
Next week will be the Ten Pin Bowls evening- starts at 6p.m. followed by a meal. A clip board went round for
this $25 covers both bowls and the meal. Late entries please phone Peter Nation.
THE RAFFLE – Winners were Steve Botica, Randal Heke and Rod Carter.
THE SERGEANT – Graham Oliver was hard on misdemeanours – he told a few stories, including one about
Real Estate being advertised on the Moon now. Some Guy is asking for deposits - Another scam!
Not that it is related to fines, but the Chartered Club has a current membership ‘special’ on. $20 will get you
membership with all the privileges until 31.3.11.
This won’t last, so be quick - forms are on the table in the entry area. A number of our members have already
applied.
No Directors meeting next week – it is postponed until November 9 th.at President Barry’s home in Rosetta Rd.
THE SPEAKER- Dave Murton introduced Paul Adams, a past President of the Cross Country Vehicle Club of
Wellington Inc.
Paul said that this very active Club which now has 275 members, was formed in 1971 and meets monthly at
the Petone Working Men’s Club. There are 4 classes of Membership, “Family Shinie’, ‘Family 4 x 4’,‘Tough’
and ‘Purpose built’ which means that all members can enjoy their 4 wheel drive outings along with others who
want to use their vehicles in the same way. Last year the Club organised 88 trips ( or outings ) which involved
over 1200 vehicle movements and varied from ‘picnic’ style through really tough, mud covered events, to
competitive trials that really test specially prepared vehicles to breaking point.
Over the page.....
There are strict guidelines to be followed on all trips – Safety is a big issue and training sessions are
mandatory covering all drivers, vehicle roadworthiness (including rollbars for eventing ), accident prevention,
recovery and evacuation, search and rescue operations. All vehicles must carry E Band Radio equipment and
the Club has a good relationship with Ambulance, Rescue Helicopter and Search and Rescue organisations.
All outings have nominated Controllers and observers with specific attention to permits, or pre arranged land
access wherever trials or runs are to be staged.
The Club liaises with local authorities and takes part and assists in land management ensuring that no Club
vehicles are involved in damage to sensitive areas such as sand dunes and other natural features.
Submissions have been made to Parliament on the management of many of these issues. The Club carries
out fundraising and donates to many worthy causes. Income is derived also from taking cruise ship
passengers and others to places that cars and buses just cannot access.
Partnerships have been formed with Rotary, (Plimmerton Rotary is one ) where charity runs have been
organised carrying passengers to such areas.. One notable trip was from Hayward through the forest and up
to the top of Puketiro where 75 vehicles followed a motor cross track and enjoyed magnificent views all over
the lower North Island. This has now become an annual trip.
Paul said that 4 Wheel driving is truly great family and community involvement, teaching skills and safety
awareness that is invaluable.
John Algar handled questions and a number of interesting facts emerged.
Tow balls are extremely dangerous if used for rescue – they can break off and turn into projectiles that can
cause a great deal of damage. Special recovery hooks are used
Yes, it is a fact that many owners of 4 wheel drive vehicles have never had their vehicle in 4 wheel drive mode.
If a vehicle is driving all 4 wheels at once it cannot turn a corner – that is why diffs are on both axles.

A little quick research showed that there is a website covering the clubs activities –
Go to ‘Cross Country Vehicle Club of Wellington Inc.’ - it’s a good read.

THE PARTING THOUGHT – from Bill Matson. -Thinking about the Hobbit
