Change to Spec Cycle 5 year to 6 year
• The next version of the AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings
will be introduced in 2016. AISC has gone to a six‐year revision cycle
(formerly five years) for its standards to coordinate with the ICC
schedule, and to slow down the revision cycle for the design
profession. As in the past, new revisions are generally a result of
changes in industry practice, new research, or the need for
clarification and simplification.
Some of the specific revisions being made in
the new Specification include the following:
• Updating material and bolting standards
• New HSS materials ASTM A1085 and A1065
ASTM A1085
Cold‐Formed Welded Carbon Steel Hollow Structural Sections (HSS)
• Changes the tolerance on the wall thickness.
• You no longer take the 0.93 reduction in section prosperities.
• New ASTM bolt specifications ASTM 3125
High Strength Structural Bolts, Steel and Alloy Steel, Heat Treated, 120 ksi
(830 MPa) and 150 ksi (1040 MPa) Minimum Tensile Strength, Inch and Metric
Dimensions
• This standard will replace the ASTM A325, A490, A1852, and F2250
• These will old familiar terms will now be called “grades”
8
Some of the specific revisions being made in
the new Specification include the following:
• Expanded structural integrity provisions applicable to connection
design
• Expanded provisions for direct modeling of member imperfections
• Revised shear lag factors for welded plates or connected elements
• Revised the procedure for addressing slender compression elements
• Revised formulation for tees in flexural compression
• Clarification of flexural design of double angles
• Revised provisions for bolts in combination with welds
Some of the specific revisions being made in
the new Specification include the following:
• Increased the nominal hole dimension for bolts 1 in. or greater
• The hole sizes are increasing slightly
• Incorporated new provisions for inspection of galvanized members
• Concern about cracks forming at the flange to web interface.
• New stability bracing provisions for beam‐columns
• Chapter K is being reorganized
• Provisions are being moved out of Chapter K
9
The Specification continues to include
nonmandatory User Notes and updated
Commentary to provide additional clarification,
simplification and background for the
Specification provisions.
Work of the Manual Committee
Continue to update and maintain AISC manuals and design examples in
response to revisions in AISC standards and inquiries from within the
Committee and the steel construction industry.

Some of the Goals for the 15th Ed Manual
• Address the thickness of the Manual
• Address the issue of the paper used in the Manual
• Should the Manual be more “electronic”
• Develop mobile apps to replace parts of the Manual
• Make the Seismic Manual and seismic design more user friendly
• Address the question about interpolation inside the tables
Address the thickness of the Manual
• Can some of the tables in the manual be removed from the manual
and placed on the AISC website?
• Each Manual subcommittee was asked to review all the table in their part and
identify table that could be removed.
• Address the question “Is the Manual becoming too much like a text book.”
11
Address the issue of the paper
used in the Manual
Should the Manual be more “electronic”
• How do engineers use the Manual?
• The research shows that engineers still like books
• How should a digital version of the Manual work?
• Hyperlinks
• What format and what application?
• Can mobile apps replace parts of the Manual?
• AISC sponsored a competition to encourage the development of mobile apps
12
Make the Seismic Manual and
seismic design more user
friendly
Address the question about interpolation
inside the tables
• Each Subcommittee was charged with reviewing tables in the section
they are responsible for and adding the note below where
appropriate.
• “Interpolation between values in this table is not
permitted. Values determined by interpolation maybe
incorrect and unconservative.”
13

• Part 1 – Dimension and Properties
• Addition of the new sizes in A6
• Part 2 – General Design Considerations
• Properly specifying materials Table 2‐4 , 2‐5, and 2‐6.

• Part 3 – Design of Flexural Members
• Table 3‐6 to Table 3‐9 “Maximum Total Uniform Load” were reviewed for
removal but will remain.
• Table 3‐10 “Available Moment vs. Unbraced Length” was reviewed for
removal but will remain.
Review by Manual Parts
• Part 4 – Design of Compression Members

Spreadsheet – Other Items of Note
• Angles Back‐to‐Back
• Pursuant to input from M2, the back‐to‐back spacing for very large angles
(those listed above) will be different than that used by the smaller angles –
for the large angles the gap will be 0”, ¾” and 1.5” on the grounds that angles
of this size are unlikely to be used back‐to‐back with thin separations, so
adjusting the gap would be a benefit to the user.
Smaller angles will remain as presently shown, having gaps of 0”, 3/8” and ¾”.

Changes to the 15th Ed Shape Data
Spreadsheet – Other Items of Note
• Minor corrections to A6 for small channels
• A member of the ASTM Committee overseeing A6 noticed errors for the
flange thickness of a C4x6.25 and the flange width for a C4x4.5. These errors
have been in A6 for a number of years, and we expect corrections to appear
in future versions of A6, but we have already made fixes to our shape data
(for C4x6.25, tf should be 0.296, and for C4x4.5 bf should be 1.52).
• Perimeter
• Perimeter cases Pc and Pd (from DG19) are shown for W, M, S, HP, C, MC and
WT shapes.
