CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

Fluid Mechanics - I
Assignment – 2
(Fluid Statics)
Part – A:

Problem No. 2.1 – 2.3, 2.5 – 2.8, 2.10 – 2.12, 2.14, 2.17, 2.18, 2.20, 2.22, 2.30 – 2.34, 2.36
– 2.42, 2.55-2.57 from “Fluid Mechanics with Engineering Applications by Robert L.
Daugherty” (Metric Edition).

Part – B:
1. What is the maximum gauge pressure of water that can be measured by means of a
piezometer tube 2m high?
2. A mercury U-tube simple manometer is used to measure the pressure above
atmospheric of water at the center of pipe labelled as “A”. If the mercury is 30cm
below A in the left limb and 20cm above A in the right limb, what is the gauge
pressure at A. Specific gravity of mercury is 13.6.
3. A manometer containing mercury is connected to two points 15m apart, on pipeline
conveying water. The pipe is straight and slopes at an angle of 15◦with the
horizontal. The manometer gives a reading of 150mm. Determine the pressure
difference between the two points of pipeline. Take specific gravity of mercury as
13.6.
4. An inverted U-tube of the form shown in figure is used to measure the pressure
difference between two points A and B through which water is flowing. The
difference of level h = 0.3m, a= 0.25m and b= 0.15m. calculate the pressure
difference if the top of manometer is filled with :
(a) Air
(b) Oil of relative density 0.8.
