MATERIALS AND METHIODS

6 solids of differing properties in measurement set (metal cube, metal block, solid metal cylinder, metal
sphere, hollow cylindrical block, metal disk) were prepared. The mass of each of the objects were
measured by a triple beam balance. The micrometer caliper was only used to measure the dimensions of
the metal sphere, while the Vernier caliper was used to measure the other solids. The metal sphere’s
diameter was measured by the micrometer caliper. Each of the properties were measured by the
corresponding instruments listed in table 1.

Table 1.

Property Instrument used

Mass Triple Beam Balance
Height Vernier Caliper
Length Vernier Caliper
Width Vernier Caliper
Diameter Micrometer Caliper

Each property was measured in 3 different trials, with slight differences between each trial due to the
precision of the instruments.

The volume of each of the solids was then measured with the corresponding formulas listed below:

Metal Cube = 𝑽𝟑

Metal Block = L x W x H
𝝅𝑫𝟐 𝒉
Solid Metal Cylinder =
𝟒

𝝅𝑫𝟑
Metal Sphere =
𝟔

𝝅
Hollow Cylindrical Block = (𝑫𝟐𝟎 𝒉𝟎 - 𝑫𝟐𝒊 𝒉𝒊 )
𝟒
𝝅
Metal Disk = (𝑫𝟐𝟎 𝒉𝟎 - 𝑫𝟐𝒊 𝒉𝒊 )
𝟒
After measuring the mass and calculating for the volume of each of the solids, the density of each was
calculated next. The density of each solid was calculated with the formula

𝑴
𝝆=
𝑽

After calculating the density of each solid, the results were compared to the accepted value by calculating
the % Error of each solid with the formula:

| 𝑻𝑽−𝑬𝑽 |
% Error = x 100
𝑻𝑽

The results were then recorded.
