Lesson Plan

MAPEH – Health

Grade Level: Grade 10


Time: 1 Hour

I. Objectives: Within the given session, the students are expected to;
1. Identify the types of quackery.
2. Complete the table by giving examples of medical, nutritional and device quackery.
3. Appreciate the knowledge about quackery.

II. Learning Task

Subject Matter: Quackery


Reference: PE & Health Grade 10, Learning Module, pp. 216-218
Materials: Pictures, Laptop, Markers, Cartolina
Strategy: Collaborative Learning

III. Procedure

A. Motivation
The class will be doing an activity entitled “Survey Says!” Students will be asked to do a survey
inside the classroom. They will be given 3 questions and each of these questions should be
asked from a different classmate. Each question should have at least 2 answers.
1. How do you choose devices to buy?
2. What should I do when my head and body ache?
3. Why do girls use skin whiteners?

B. Lesson Proper
Ask students to define quackery. Define and Discuss quackery, quack and the major
characteristics of health quackery. Ask students to read the definition projected.

Quackery is a form of health fraud, is any advertisement, promotion, or sale of products and
services that have not been scientifically proven safe and effective. It is being operated by a
Quack.

A Quack is an individual that has little or no professional qualifications to practice medicine.


He/She also pretentiously uses meaningless medical jargon, and relies on scare tactics, paranoid
accusations and quick fixes.

Three Major Characteristics of Health Quackery;


1. It is a Big business. A huge amount of money is spent on fraudulent health products and
services.
2. It multiplies and spreads fast.
3. It thrives on individuals who are diagnosed with illness that are known to have no cure.

C. Activity
The class will be divided into 3 groups, each will be given a poster that shows a form of
quackery. Students will be asked to explain what the poster is and will be asked to place the
poster under the strip (form of quackery) where it belong.
D. Analysis
Define the three forms of quackery. Ask students why do you think quackery thrives in the
Philippines?

 Medical Quackery – includes cures, treatments, and remedies of various health


conditions that are drugless or bloodless in nature.
 Nutritional Quackery – involves promotion of food fads, and other nutritional practices
that claim to be all-natural. These are believed to have beneficial properties of multiple
plants in one product.
 Device Quackery – Makes use of Miraculous gadgets (Such as Dials, gauges, electrodes,
magnets, and blinkers) that are believed to cure certain conditions.

Quackery thrives in the Philippines probably because of the following reasons.


 The Quick and Inexpensive Cure
 Ignorance
 Fear of Surgery or Legitimate Medical Treatment
 Effect of Placebos
 Hypochondria Patients

E. Abstraction
Ask students to define quackery in their own words.

F. Application
Students will be asked to go back to their groups assigned earlier, a leader must be chosen and
the leader will read the instruction for the group to discuss their answers. They will be
categorizing products, based on the forms of quackery and will be asked to discuss their answers
in class.

G. Assessment
In a ½ sheet of paper, write a paragraph essay on how you can protect your family and yourself
from quackery.

IV. Assignment
