SECTION A: SUMMARY WRITING (15%)
Read the following passage carefully. Write a summary on:
 the types of phobia and their characteristics
 the treatments of phobias
Your summary should be in continuous writing and should not be longer than 150 words. Credit will be given
for the use of own words. State, in brackets, the number of words you have written.

Phobias are a persistent, abnormal and irrational fear of a specific thing or situation that forces the
sufferer to avoid it, despite the awareness and reassurance that it is not dangerous. We are not born with
phobias. It is generally recognised that phobias are learned behaviours, decisions we make at a very deep
unconscious level for very good logical reasons.

There are many types of phobia. One of them is Agoraphobia. It is a generalised fear of leaving your
home or familiar safe area, and of the inevitable panic attacks that will follow. It is the only phobia regularly
treated as a medical condition. Agoraphobia is real and serious but treatable. Experts believe that
agoraphobia is caused by a combination of biological and environmental factors, much like other disorders,
such as heart disease and diabetes. There are various treatments for those who suffer from Agoraphobia.
Among them are Behaviour Therapy, which focuses on modifying and gaining control over unwanted
behaviour and Cognitive Therapy that will change unproductive or harmful thought patterns.

Another technique that most therapists recommend is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. It is a

combination of Cognitive and Behaviour Therapies (CBT). One of the benefits of these types of therapy is
that the patient learns recovery skills that are useful for a lifetime. Another therapy is the Relaxation
technique which helps individual develop the ability to more effectively cope with the stress that contribute
to phobia. The techniques taught include breathing re-training and exercise. Some people may respond to
agoraphobia treatment after a few months, while others make take a year or more.

Arachnophobia is a fear of spiders. This fear is generally recognised as a learnt behaviour, due to
possibly an event from childhood, such as getting bitten by a spider. Hypnosis helps cure a multitude of
phobias. Curing your fear of spiders is more of a mind game than anything else. It reverses these adverse
psychological thought processes by implementing confident, positive affirmations in the subconscious.
During hypnosis, you enter a serene and tranquil state, letting all tension and fear fade away. This will allow
your body and spirit to be calm while the fears and anxieties you have about spiders are removed from your
mind. Your new manner of thinking and beliefs will be recalled throughout the day to help alleviate your
fear and enable you to react in a calm, reasonable way.

2
Another type of phobia is Ichthyophobia, the fear of fish. What’s so terrifying about fish? The good
thing is that there are ways to treat this condition. You could use Hypnotherapy as it helps to reprogramme
your subconscious programmes that may be part of your fear. When these programmes are de-bugged, the
symptoms of Ichthynophobia are often minimised. However, some people do not like the feeling of loss of
control in allowing someone else to play with their minds.

Another approach would be Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) which is basically the study and
practice of how we create our reality. From the NLP viewpoint, a phobia is the result of programmes or
thoughts that you have created that do not work very well. With NLP, these thoughts are revealed and re-
programmed so that the Ichthyophobia is minimised and often eliminated. This intervention is quite
effective. If that doesn’t work out for you well, maybe you should try Energy Psychology. Studies have
shown this technique to be the most effective. It is based on a theory and practice that has been around for a
few thousand years. It has the same foundation roots as acupuncture, except in this case there are no needles
used. You can call it emotional acupuncture without the needles.

All kinds of phobia can be treated. It depends on how an individual reacts to the type of treatment
that he undergoes. The treatment could take a week or even a month or a year to overcome the phobia.
