Study Habits and Pupils’ Attitude in Science as Related

to Academic Performance among Grade 6 Pupils

Type of Research: Basic Research

PURPOSE
This study determined the study habits and pupils’ attitude in Science in relation to Grade 6
pupils’ academic performance at Piela Elementary School. More consciousness opportunities to
be given to pupils these include developing a genuine interest in discovering and solving
problem taking into account the scientific attitude.

DESIGN/ METHODOLOGY
The descriptive-correlation method of research was used in this study. The researcher used the
instrument Study Habits Questionnaire and “Test of Science Related Attitudes” (TOSTRA) by
Barry J. Fraser (1981) for pupils’ attitude to determine the students’ study habits.

FINDINGS
Study habits and attitude are independent to each other that the techniques of study being done
by the students and the manner it has been accomplished by means of reading, observation,
questioning, and reflection and the like does not relate to that of their attitudes in Science.
Pupils’ attitude in Science is not pre-requisite to their academic performance that regardless of
what kind of attitude the pupil possesses he/ she must strive to do better in his/ her performance
due to the need to pass the subject.

RESEARCH LIMITATION
Considering the findings deemed in this study, results are only applicable to Grade 6 Science
classes of Piela Elementary School.

ORIGINALITY /VALUE
Improving classroom facilities especially Science laboratories and conducive learning
environment must be given priority.
