Theme: The movie basically tries to look at the relationship from the point of view of a man, a

victim of the dreaded term “Casual” for the people who want real love. It tries to tell that you
can’t make anybody fall in love with you the way you want it. Surely, many girls go for the men
who are rich, settled and have a name for themselves. For starter, it rises over the melodramatic
revenge story of boys who achieved something after being dumped by his girlfriend for another
man. We find Summer, sometime cold, sometime heartless but never manipulative. The ground
rules of dating is led in clear terms by her and it’s up to Tom to accept it or let it go. He
accepted, thinking perhaps it would lead somewhere but It wasn’t meant to be. We don’t know
what went wrong in their relationship and it doesn’t even matter. We are very clear what’s movie
trying to say. We ended up sympathizing with Tom but we also can’t blame Summer.

STORY: There is nothing very different about story, the same - boy meets girl, fall in love, and
finally ended up not being together. What makes it very enduring is that the way it is told and the
point it tries to make and succeed. The swinging of story between past and present gives it a
feel of nostalgic and that’s where it’s success lies. The irony of dialogues created by this back
and forth motion often plays with the our judgement of characters.

Direction: The movie is basically a musical. We get to feel the happiness, the sadness, the
hollowness, the loneliness of the character through the music. The reality Vs expectation
sequence also works well. The direction is good.
