Tolerance space : a concept for diversity space in Indonesia

Indonesia is a country with diversity both culture, nature and race. After that, Indonesia also have
many religion people with different religion, like muslim, Christians, Hindu, buddhist, and so
forth. With diversity, Indonesia has faced many problems from then on racism, religion disorder,
etc.

As an architects, they should mind a concept of space for reduce or blot out this problems. In
architectural, based on aristoteles said, “space is tangiable and measured, limited by physical
clarity, discernible comprehension of his existence” (arsitekturberbicara.wordpress.com).

Spaces is determined by two types, i.e. public space and private space. According to Herman
Hertzberger in his book Lessons for student in architecture, public is an area that is accessible to
everyone at all times, responsibility for upkeep is held collectively. Private is an area whose
accessibility is determined by a small group or one person, with responsibility for upkeep. At the
definition, public space and private space is important in our life. Then, public space without
private space can make disorder, private space without public space is not make an interaction
between people to people. After that, at the books too, the concepts ‘public’ and ‘private’ may be
seen and understood in relative terms as a series of spatial qualities which, differing gradually,
refer to accessibility, responsibility, the relation between private property and supervision of
specific spatial units[1]. Besides that, if viewed by characteristics, public space have 3 types, i.e.
private public spaces, semi-private public spaces, and full-public spaces. Differences between
this three types on accessibility.

At this cases, we should solve this problem. With architectural solution, there are a concept,
namely, Tolerance space.. Before that, tolerance is an attitude of mutual respect and respect
between groups or between individuals in society or in other spheres. So, Tolerance space is a
spaces with attitude mutual respects. Tolerance space is a solution for solve this problems, With
tolerance space, this problems will reduce. This concept is not about shape of this spaces but how
to build a religion building with other religion building in one area without to disturb their
worship activities. Besides it, tolerance is not also for religion but culture too, etc.

For example, Istiqlal mosque and Jakarta Chatedral. this building are adjoins. But, it’s not disturb
for their activities cause have a distance even thought this distance is neighboring.

After that, Tolerance space is not about too a distance from building to building, but how this
space are life. Like their people have interaction with other.
Besides religion, tolerance space can using at diversity culture area. In early, Indonesia as a
diversity country is required to unify all the diversity in a single space. So, with culture diversity,
it should have a space. Like a space with many diversity culture in one area.

Example, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah. This area is a one of example tolerance space in
Indonesia because this area have many miniature of Indonesian culture. After that, it have a
religion building. Taman Mini Indonesia Indah is also namely face of Indonesia or miniature of
Indonesia. Purpose to build is introduce to people or tourist about face of Indonesia, have an
diversity.

Besides that, to make this spaces is life, the people should have in their heart sense of tolerance.
If they are not have that, This space is not have a meaning.

After that, shape of tolerance spaces it’s like green open area, recreation area, tourism area, etc.
then, in Indonesia should be added cause there are still short number of tolerance spaces.

Besides religion and cultural, race diversity spaces is one of tolerance spaces. But in Indonesia is
needed many this spaces. Because there are many cases about racism. Be at the bottom of this
cases, have a different place for race. For example, papuanese disorder in every region in
indonesia. This cases was happened cause racism. Besides that, short of tolerance spaces is a
causes. So, the solution of it is build a spaces without gave rise to symptoms of racism. Like
build a toilet without separate race, open area without disorder, etc. This concept has been a long
one, but there are people not realized that. So, if this concept are realized, perceptions of racism
should be erased. Then, cultivating a sense of unity.

Besides this essay, there are points, i.e. tolerance space is important in our country. With
tolerance space, bad happen to be good happen. Tolerance space should be builds in every region
in Indonesia for reduce disorder happen. Then, as the architect, we are not about design that, but
we are can applied principle of tolerance and raise up unity in diversity “bhinneka tunggal ika”.
Tolerance spaces can make diversity people to have a sense of humanity. This concept must be
applied in our country with architecture concept.
