FEBRUARY

 Safe Sex Day on February 13th, 2020 (Valentine’s Day) 11am-2pm.


Hosted by Audrey Burgdorfer RN Location: Student Atrium
Description: Light hearted awareness activity to help prevent STD’s and Unwanted
Pregnancy. Safe Sex Kits with Hershey’s Chocolate Kisses will be provided for free.

 “Chalk about Love” as this Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month


Valencia Campus: Tuesday, February 18th 11-1:00pm at the Flag Pole
Canyon Country Campus: Wednesday, February 19th 11-1:00pm on Cougar Campus
Chalk about Love in an opportunity for students to spread awareness about Teen Dating
Violence with a splash of color and art. By writing a message of hope, even a temporary
one, on sidewalks abound campus you can offer support for someone needing help.
Show your support for healthy relationships this Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month
by participating in Child & Family Center’s Chalk about Love event on campus.

 Eating Disorders Awareness Day, Thursday February 27th @ 11:30-12 Student Center

Description: For National Eating Disorder Awareness Week. Spreading awareness and
information about the common problem of eating disorders.

 Suicide Prevention Intervention and Response Training (SPIRT) Friday Feb 28th 9:30-
11:30 AM Henry Mayo Health & Fitness Center 24525 Town Center Drive Val. (across
from the Hyatt)
Coordinated by Henry Mayo Fitness Center, BMW and Larry Schallert LCSW
Description: This session is designed to help participants identify the risk factors and
warning signs of suicide. You will learn about issues related to mental health, recovery
and stigma, how to respond compassionately and effectively in order to prevent suicide
and self-harm, how to support individuals who may be experiencing significant distress
interfering with their life or personal functioning, and know where to locate community
resources that can help those in need

Description: Come discover practical and research-based strategies that help decrease
stress, improve focus, and make better decisions. This seminar will touch on supporting
research and positive effects, as well as provide an opportunity to participate in
mindfulness practices that can be applied to your daily life.

 Wellness Walk and Talk 12:00pm to 1:00pm Thursday March 19th with Kinesiology
Professor Garrett Rieck Meet at: Flag Pole
Description: Talk, Walk and Ask Questions while strolling around the beautiful COC
Valencia Campus with Kinesiology and Health Professor Garrett Rieck. Topics of
discussion will range from healthy eating habits to the mental health benefits of
being physical active. Please wear appropriate footwear for walking on uneven
terrain.

Description: This is an 8-hour course that gives people the skills to help someone in the
workplace who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health
crisis. The evidence behind the program demonstrates that it does build mental health
literacy, helping the public identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illness.
 Student Veteran Challenges in Higher Learning Series Movies:” Weight of Honor”
& “12 Strong” Friday March 27th. 6-8 PM Mentry Hall 305
Coordinated by the COC Veterans Services Center, SN&WC, SCV Veterans Collaborative,
the VET Center, and SCV Veterans Resource Center
Description: a special movie screening and discussion of the first comprehensive
documentary to chronicle the courageous lives of the caregivers and families of veterans
who have been catastrophically wounded in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. It’s a rare
glimpse into their lives as the grapple with the “new normal”. Special Added Movie 12

 Managing the Stress Threshold – April 16th 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Location: EPEK-102
Coordinated by SH&WC and Presented by Tracy Taris LMFT
Description: Stress is an everyday fact. There is healthy stress that motivates, energizes
and prompts you to productive action. Then, there is unhealthy stress that debilitates,
frustrates, and can even cause physical and mental illness. Learn how to identify your
Stress Threshold - the amount of stress you can take and remain in the “healthy” range -
how to prevent a move into the unhealthy range, as well as how to eliminate stressors
once you have crossed your Threshold.

Coordinated by Mary Manual with skin care expert Cynthia Smith and the SH&WC
Description: Learn basic skin care, skin cancer prevention. Reasonably priced over the
counter skin purchases will be discussed. Benefits of medical esthetician services for problem or
preventative skin care. Followed by a Q&A session. Handouts and skin care samples will be
given; open to staff and students

 Earth Day Event – April 22nd 2020 11-1 PM Student Center Valencia Atrium

Description: Bring Awareness to Students about the polluting effects of nicotine products
to the environment. Earth Day context with prizes for those who would like participate.
 Out of the Darkness: COC Campus Walk for Mental Health Awareness, Support and
Healing. Saturday April 25th - Registration 8 AM - Walk is 9-Noon Cougar Stadium
Coordinated by SH&WC and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
Description: The Out of the Darkness walk is a time when students/faculty and
administration along with the community can come together to create a culture within
our hometown that is smart about mental health. It is an event to bring hope to those
that may struggle to find the light through the darkness, and ensure that they know they
are NOT ALONE! We also honor the lives of those we have lost to
suicide!!! Entertainment, speakers, and snacks provides along with community
resources and other activities.

Coordinated by the COC MH Ambassadors and Active Minds Club
Description: As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, come visit our ambassadors
and club members, receive giveaways, information and FREE PIZZA as we bring
awareness to the issues of Mental Health on college campuses. Learn about the
numerous mental health resources available to you on campus and participate in all of
our activities. The “Conversation Couch” will be open to help students meet new people.
The “Positivity Wall” is wall filled with your post-its to help spread compliments and
positivity.
 Shine a Light Event – Tues. May 12th & Wed. May 13th Location: Honor Grove
Coordinated by Gayle Freund & Student Health & Wellness Center
Description: Powerful lantern display representing the 1100 college students who lose
their life each year to suicide. Find out what you can do to help yourself and others.
Local Mental Health Providers will be there midday to answer questions. Community
Resources, suicide prevention information, flashlights and food will be provided from 11-
1 PM at the flagpole
